Darn Good Westerns - Volume 1 video
$9.69 DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK is John Ford's first film in Technicolor (which recently perfected far richer shadings of color than had previously been possible), and the director uses it to stunning effect. The film stars Henry Fonda as Revolutionary War-era farmer Gilbert Martin, who, in 1776, has returned with his well-born wife, Lana (Claudette Colbert), to his rustic cabin in the increasingly dangerous Mohawk River valley. At first unaccustomed to the harsh physical challenges of frontier life, Lana adjusts to the work at hand and is soon able to help her husband in the fields. Shortly after they learn that the colonies are at war with the British, their farmhouse is attacked and burned to the ground by a party of Tory-led Indians. The feisty Widow McKlennar (Edna May Oliver) provides temporary shelter for the couple, but it's only a matter of time before the Indians launch a more brutal assault. Save for THE QUIET MAN, DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK contains the richest passages of pastoral imagery in Ford's entire canon, the visual beauty nearly upstaging the spectacular and terrifying Indian battles. The performances, particularly Oliver (who garnered an Oscar nomination) ...

$7.05 Director Rudolph Maté dramatizes the pioneering adventures of two of America's greatest explorers in the stirring 1950s Western THE FAR HORIZONS. Darn Good Westerns - Volume 1 review
$9.69 This relatively little-known film is widely hailed by fans of the macabre. Truly ahead of its time, NIGHTMARE ALLEY is set in the gritty, surrealistic world of traveling carnivals, where eccentric people of all possible varieties interact on a daily basis. In a departure from his usual roles as the Hollywood leading man, handsome Tyrone Power plays a morally questionable circus apprentice determined to climb the carnival ladder no matter what the price. Powers shows immense range in what was arguably ...

Darn Good Westerns - Volume 1 film
$13.39 Dennis Weaver stars in this made-for-television film chronicling a little-known figure in American history. In 1865, Maryland physician Samuel Mudd (Weaver) became inadvertently linked to the murder of President Abraham Lincoln when he treated the broken leg of assassin John Wilkes Booth. Framed as Booth's co-conspirator, Mudd was sentenced to a lifetime of hard labor and suffered years of cruelty and hardship at a notorious penal colony. Mudd's wife Frances (Susan Sullivan) continued to maintain her husband's innocence throughout his ordeal until he was finally pardoned by President Andrew Johnson for acts of bravery during a yellow fever epidemic.
The tragic story of Dr. Samuel Mudd of Maryland, who in 1865 was arrested for his alleged complicity in the conspiracy to assassinate Abraham Lincoln and sentenced by an illegal military court to a lifetime of hard labor at the American penal colony of Fort Jefferson on the Dry Tortugas. ...
