This gripping new series brings to life Dickens's powerful story of struggle and hardship in 1820s London. When Arthur Clennam (Matthew Macfadyen) returns to England after many years abroad, his curiosity is piqued by the presence in his mother's house of a young seamstress, Amy Dorrit (Claire Foy). His quest to discover the truth about 'Little Dorrit' takes him to the Marshalsea Debtors Prison, where he discovers that the dark shadows of debt stretch far and wide in a web of desperation and deceit. Filled with humorous yet tragic characters, Little Dorrit is a stirring rags to riches to rags story, exposing the underbelly of nineteenth century British society as only Charles Dickens can. After a long period abroad, Arthur Clennam (Matthew MacFadyen) returns to his mother's house in London to discover a beautiful seamstresses living in his midst: Amy Dorrit (Claire Foy). But who is she? As Clennam investigates Dorrit's history, he discovers a past brimming with surprising secrets. This engrossing adaptation of Charles Dickens's satirical novel is given a fine reading by screenwriter Andrew Davies, veteran of such BBC productions as PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and BLEAK HOUSE.

$15.05 Though director Julian Jarrold's adaptation of the Evelyn Waugh novel BRIDESHEAD REVISITED spans decades and continents, it's a taut film that never drags and can excite contemporary audiences. Matthew Goode (MATCH POINT) stars as lower-class Londoner Charles Ryder, an aspiring artist who is beginning his studies in history at Oxford in the 1920s. A chance encounter with dandyish aristocrat Sebastian Flyte (Ben Whishaw, PERFUME) changes the course of his life. The two embark on a close, intense friendship that is further complicated by the introduction of Sebastian's beautiful sister Julia (Hayley Atwell, CASSANDRA'S DREAM) and his overbearing, extremely religious mother, Lady Marchmain (Emma Thompson). BRIDESHEAD REVISITED follows Charles from the carefree '20s through the beginning of World War II, focusing on his complicated relationship with the upper-class family and their estate, Brideshead.
Along with ATONEMENT's Joe Wright, Jarrold (BECOMING JANE) represents a new era of British period filmmaking. Both men bring a modern sensibility to their work that makes their films feel fresh and sexy, though they never lose authenticity. Jarrold employs some handheld camera work and quick-cut ...

$21.49 Noted German director Volker Schlondorff's (THE TIN DRUM) highly compelling THE NINTH DAY provides a unique examination of historical events that took place during the Holocaust. Interned at the Dachau concentration camp near Munich in 1942 for anti-Nazi activities, Henri Kremer (Ulrich Matthes), an influential Luxembourg priest, endures terrible hardships along with thousands of his clergymen. Mysteriously, Kremer is released and sent back home to his family in Luxembourg for nine days. Upon his return, the local up-and-coming SS chief, Gebhardt (August Diehl) charges Kremer with a difficult assignment: convince the Bishop of Luxembourg to sign an agreement with the Nazis, thereby providing an integral link between Hitler in Berlin and the Pope in the Vatican. These scenes between the young, eager Gebhardt and the older, stoic Kremer simmer with friction and meaningful ...

Little Dorrit DVD
$9.39 In 1984, writer Sam Shepard and director Wim Wenders teamed up for the indie hit PARIS, TEXAS, a story about family and identity, set in the American West, that won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. More than twenty years later, they're back together again for DON'T COME KNOCKING, a highly entertaining journey that examines the similar topics, with equally inspiring results. Shepard stars as Howard Spence, a former Hollywood cowboy legend whose career has fallen apart in a blur of women, drugs, and alcohol. He disappears from the set of his latest film in Moab, Utah (directed by the great George Kennedy), bent on figuring out just who he really is, so he heads home to Elko, Nevada, to see his lonely mother (Eva Marie Saint) for the first time in thirty years. Unbeknownst to him, he is being trailed by Sutter (Tim Roth), a bondsman determined to find him and bring him back to finish the $32 million movie he started. The grizzled Spence finds out that he might have a child from a fling on an old film set, so he takes off for Butte, Montana, where his past quickly catches up to him in the form of a small-town waitress (Shepard's real-life wife, Jessica Lange). As he tries to establish some kind of relationship with his son (Gabriel Mann), a musician with a bizarre girlfriend (Fairuza Balk), he is also followed by a quiet young woman (Sarah Polley) walking around with an urn. ...
