Widescreen; Additional Footage; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; Soundtrack Spanish; English Subtitles; Spanish Subtitles; French Subtitles; Dir/Cast Commentary Marvel's classic comic book comes to life in this exciting big-screen adaptation. The story focuses on the efforts of a well-intentioned professor, Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart). By pulling together a group of superhuman mutants, Professor X hopes to prove to the world that these genetically enhanced beings are not the dangerous, evil villains humanity claims them to be. When Magneto (Ian McKellen), an angry mutant, vows to eradicate human existence, it's up to the X-Men to save the day and keep the world united. Bryan Singer's film is a visual feast, containing a host of standout performances, particularly from newcomer Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. The VHS and DVD releases contain 10 minutes of extra footage. Based on the long-running Marvel comic book series, X-MEN takes place in the near future, as certain humans are evolving into mutants with special powers. In the Canadian wilderness, a young runaway mutant named Rogue (Anna Paquin) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), a bad-tempered, quick-healing mutant with retractable metal claws, are suddenly attacked by the powerful Magneto (Ian McKellen) and his lackeys. Fortunately, Cyclops (James Marsden) and Storm (Halle Berry), students of the compassionate Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), interfere and bring them back to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Here Wolverine and Rogue learn more about the conflict between Xavier and the militant Magneto, who wants to power a device that will genetically alter humans, with possibly deadly results. Only Xavier's students can stop Magneto's plans.
Director Bryan Singer (THE USUAL SUSPECTS) displays his expertise with an ensemble cast, accomplishing a feat by making the first live-action film about an entire group of superheroes. Hugh Jackman's portrayal of the ill-tempered Wolverine is dead-on, while Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are ideally matched in their Martin Luther King, Jr.- and Malcolm X-like roles. Smart and well-paced, X-MEN towers above most comic book movies. Theatrical release: July 14, 2000.
Television commercials designed to look like political campaign ads for the McCarthy-like character of Senator Kelly (played by Bruce Davison) began airing months before the release of X-MEN. The spots gave little indication that they were X-MEN movie commercials but urged viewers to "stop the X-Men" and log on to the Mutant Watch Web site. Even the Internet site itself contained made-up "anti-mutant" literature.
Director Bryan Singer initially wanted Russell Crowe to play Wolverine. However, Dougray Scott was cast as the clawed hero but bowed out to finish work on MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2. The role of Wolverine finally went to Hugh Jackman. (Both Crowe and Jackman, coincidentally, are Australian.)
Jackman was notorious on the set for getting into his character. In order to create Wolverine's edgy disposition, he often took cold showers. And though the actors got along well, Jackman avoided Tyler Mane (Sabretooth) during shooting to create a sense of rivalry.
A total of 700 individual blades made of various materials were used for Wolverine's claws by Jackman and his stunt doubles.
X-MEN creator Stan Lee makes a cameo appearance when Senator Kelly emerges from the ocean on a crowded beach. Lee also appeared in MALLRATS, which references characters in X-MEN and other comics.
The visor worn by James Marsden in his role as Cyclops apparently impaired his vision so severely that he sometimes had to be led around the movie set.
Although Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen were both members of the Royal Shakespeare Company in England, X-MEN was their first film together. However, Stewart and McKellen had briefly acted together in Trevor Nunn's production of the play EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FAVOUR.
Rebecca Romijn-Stamos had to repeatedly endure more than eight hours of makeup application for her role as the scaly blue-skinned shape-shifter Mystique.
Beast, the X-Men's resident blue-furred scientist, was originally set to appear in the movie but was not included in the shooting script. Some of his science-oriented traits were given to the character Jean Grey (Famke Janssen).
Young X-Men such as Iceman, Jubilee, Colossus, and Kitty Pryde make brief appearances during the scenes at Professor Xavier's school.
Ray Park (Toad), best known for his role as Darth Maul in STAR WARS EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE, mimics Darth Maul's fighting style in one of X-MEN's action sequences.
X-MEN cost only $75 million to make, a relatively small budget for a film that contains more than 450 special effects. X-Men Quotes/Excerpts: "When they come out...does it hurt?"--Rogue (Anna Paquin), asking Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) about his retractable metal claws

X - Men Holds It's Own After the success of Blade, Marvel started to capitalize on it's heavy hitters, with X - Men 1st. The first movie from the summer of 2000 is a sold effort, with everyone fitting their roles well. Hugh Jackman is excellent as Wolverine, and Patrick stewart as Charles Xavier and Ian McKellen as Magneto do a fine job in showing the future of Mutants in the Marvel Universe. With Magneto, McKellan plays him as a tragic villan. You can see things from his point of view. Very good performances by Famke Jansen as Jean Grey,James Mardsen as Cyclops, Anna Paquin as Rogue, and Halle Berry as Storm. Most memorable scene - when Wolverine saves Rogue's life on the Statue of Liberty. Submitted by tkirtsos (Berlin, MD) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

$26.65 X2: X-MEN UNITED, the remarkable sequel to X-MEN, picks up shortly after the first film's finale. At the White House, a would-be assassin--the acrobatic, teleporting blue mutant Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming)--menaces the president. Meanwhile, in the Canadian Rockies, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) searches for answers to his mysterious past at the top-secret facility where he received his metallic skeleton and claws. Back at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) and Storm (Halle Berry) instruct students Rogue (Anna Paquin), Iceman (Shawn Ashmore), and Pyro (Aaron Stanford), while Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and Cyclops (James Marsden) pay a visit to the imprisoned Magneto (Ian McKellen). However, Magneto has a secret weapon in the shape-shifting Mystique (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos). Soon allies and enemies alike will unite to defeat the hate-filled military scientist William Stryker (Brian Cox), who wants to rid the world of mutants. When Stryker launches a ruthless two-pronged attack that leaves the school under siege and Xavier and Cyclops captured, Wolverine and the remaining X-Men must spring to action to save their friends and prevent all-out genocide.
Even better than its excellent precursor, X2 delves deeper into the X-Men mythology, introducing new characters and touching on essential storylines from the decades-long run of the Marvel comic book series. Providing larger action-packed set pieces and ...

X-Men review
$10.49 DUEL, one of Steven Spielberg's first vehicles, foreshadowed the blockbuster film JAWS. Using minimal dialogue and effects, Spielberg defines the characteristics of his prolific oeuvre in this early work. Through tight cinematic narration, he effectively conveys the sudden and shocking horror that develops over the course of the film.
On a deserted stretch of California highway, businessman David Mann (Dennis
Weaver) settles into his red Valiant for the long drive to an urgent meeting. Ahead of him on the road is a slow-moving diesel truck, which David innocently decides to pass. So begins the long duel between David and the Goliath-like rig in this nerve-wracking TV movie. Menacing David at every twist and turn of the highway, the truck tries to push the Valiant onto a train track, run David down in a phone booth, engage him in a high-speed chase, and tailgate him into oblivion. Hoping to lose the rig, David stops at a roadside café only to realize that the driver of the truck is also in the restaurant. The driver is never seen, except one shot of his beefy
arm waving the Valiant ahead into oncoming traffic. Instead, Spielberg uses
the monstrous truck itself, much like the way he used the shark in JAWS, to
harass and taunt. After its broadcast on television, DUEL was released
theatrically with extra footage added.

$26.19 High school romance is difficult enough to navigate when both people are human. But for 17-year-old Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart, INTO THE WILD) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson, HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE), Edward's life as a vampire complicates things even more. At first, when Bella moves from sunny Phoenix to the rainiest corner of Washington State, she isn't sure where she fits in at her new high school. Then she meets Edward, an ethereal beauty of a boy whose unnatural speed and strength lead Bella to the conclusion that her new crush is one of the undead. Suddenly, Bella's boring life is transformed; she's surrounded by love and danger in equal parts, thanks to the hunger of Edward and others of his kind.
TWILIGHT is based on the first book in the addictive series by author Stephenie Meyer. Director Catherine Hardwicke (THIRTEEN) certainly knows her audience, which is primarily the teenage girls who worship the book and its characters. There are plenty of swoonworthy shots of Pattinson's perfectly pale Edward, and his romance with Stewart's nicely acted Bella will cause many a sigh among the devoted fans. While TWILIGHT is primarily a love story in the ROMEO AND JULIET mold, there's also plenty of action and horror to be found. Blood flows (this is a vampire movie, after all), but the small amount of gore shouldn't be too much for the squeamish viewers--and it might even draw a boy or two to the screen. The film's record-breaking box office take alone is proof that the film's appeal isn't limited to screaming teen girls.

$15.65 NORTH BY NORTHWEST is a suspense thriller that finds Cary Grant in the role of Roger Thornhill, a Manhattan advertising executive mistaken for a spy. Considered by many to be the prototypical pure action movie (creating the template for later James Bond and Indiana Jones films), the film is a cross-country roller-coaster ride with Alfred Hitchcock at the helm. The film is duly famous for several classic and indelible scenes, including the desert biplane encounter and the Mt. Rushmore climax. The original title was THE MAN IN LINCOLN'S NOSE, which was replaced by a reference to a line from William Shakespeare's HAMLET (in which Hamlet says, "I am but mad north-north-west."). The magical combination of Hitchcock and the debonair Grant--who made four wonderful films together--makes NORTH BY NORTHWEST a suspense-filled standout.
When Thornhill finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, the world as he knows it comes to an end. Suddenly danger threatens as the hapless businessman ...

$22.69 When inexperienced call girl Alabama Whitman (Patricia Arquette) is paid to seduce comic-book-nerd and Elvis fanatic Clarence Worley (Christian Slater), she doesn't expect to fall for him. But these two lost souls seem to be made for each other and quickly pledge their love, marrying at Detroit's city hall. Clarence discovers some newfound bravado and attempts to retrieve Alabama's possessions from her pimp, Drexl (Gary Oldman), who isn't exactly eager to let Alabama go. Fleeing Drexl's apartment, Clarence not only leaves a trail of bodies, but also inadvertently mistakes a suitcase of uncut cocaine for one with his wife's clothing, and the chase is on. The unlikely newlyweds head for Los Angeles hoping to sell the cocaine and make enough money to leave the country. Unfortunately, they also have to contend with the mob, yuppie drug dealers and the police. Michael Rapaport is amusing as Clarence's best friend who lives with Floyd, a stoner played by Brad Pitt. A sedate Dennis Hopper appears as Clarence's father, who ultimately faces off with mob boss Vincenzo Coccotti (Christopher Walken). Director Tony Scott (CRIMSON TIDE, ENEMY OF THE STATE) does justice to the violence and quirkiness of Quentin Tarantino's second feature film script.
