UFO: Andy Parker (drums); Paul Raymond, Phil Mogg, Vinnie Moore. Personnel: Phil Mogg (vocals); Paul Raymond (guitar, keyboards); Vinnie Moore (guitar). If the term "journeyman" could be applied to a band, it would be a good fit for UFO. Since 1969, the band has consistently delivered solid albums of no-nonsense hard rock, occasionally dipping into space rock, AOR, and metal along the way. THE VISITOR features original vocalist Phil Mogg and original drummer Andy Parker, along with guitar shredder legend Vinnie Moore (original bassist Pete Way was unable to participate due to health issues). True to form, the album is full of energetic, straight-ahead heavy rock. "Stranger in Town" is driven by a monster riff reminiscent of Deep Purple's 80's comeback PERFECT STRANGERS, while "Saving Me" features bluesy slide guitar that would fit in well on a classic Led Zeppelin track. Like Saturday Night Live, UFO have had plenty of creative ups and downs over the years but have often demonstrated that one should never give up on them. The veteran hard rockers have recorded some superb albums along the way, and they have recorded some weak, lackluster albums, too. But even when they let their followers down on occasion, UFO have had a way of bouncing back and giving those followers new reasons to be optimistic. The Visitor, it turns out, is a respectable 40th anniversary present from UFO, who were formed in 1969 and remained active 40 years later in 2009. This 2009 release finds two members of the original 1969 lineup (lead singer Phil Mogg and drummer Andy Parker) joined by keyboardist/guitarist Paul Raymond (a 1976 arrival) and guitarist Vinnie Moore, who didn't come on board until the 2000s; regrettably, bassist Pete Way (another original member going back to 1969) was unable to participate due to health problems. Some Michael Schenker devotees will no doubt refuse to give this album a chance because the former Scorpions/MSG guitarist isn't on board, but truth be told, UFO made some valuable contributions to hard rock during their pre-Schenker days and continued to make them after his departure. The Visitor is perhaps a somewhat misleading title for this 42-minute CD because it has a bit of a space rock connotation despite the fact that there isn't a drop of space rock to be found here; regardless, The Visitor offers a worthwhile dose of '70s-minded hard rock -- and even though "Hell Driver," "Stranger in Town," and other bluesy offerings aren't in a class with '70s favorites like "Doctor, Doctor," "Rock Bottom," and "Lights Out," they are enjoyable nonetheless. The Visitor won't go down in history as one of UFO's essential albums, but longtime fans -- at least the ones who are open to the possibility of hearing a Schenker-less lineup -- will find it to be a solid 40th anniversary present from these hard rock survivors. ~ Alex Henderson Visitor Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) 40 years of rockin' UFO still delivers Even with Pete Way missing due to liver disease and Peter Pichel, the talented German manning bass, UFO delivers. And well! Phil Mogg's vocals alternatley growl, howl, soften and sooth the songs. Andy Parker keeps capable beat and rocks the skins, Paul Raymond can play and Vinnie Moore displays deft touches on guitar mixed with heavy metal, R and B and classic 70's rock sounds. Saving Me, Rock Ready, Forsaken and Villlians and THieves are the best tunes on an enjoyalbe disc, perfect for long car trips or Friday night parties! New UFO (The Visitor) I am a long time UFO fan and still amazed how they maintain that classic UFO sound, and still come up with new material that sounds as good as ever. I truly recommend this new cd. Phil Mogg's vocals are as good as ever and Vinnie Moore's guitar work is purely awesome. Submitted by dbullock (Saddle Brook, N.J., USA) Was This Review Helpful? Another great album from UFO This is another great cd from UFO. The 3rd since Michael Schenker abandoned ship. Vinnie Moore has done a very admirable job on the last 3 releases. Playing technical solos like Schenker while strumming simple, yet catchy riffs on rythum guitar like Paul Chapman. All in his own style. Phil Mogg still soumds great! A little weathering, but like fine wine with age....Andy Parker returns for 2 in a row on drums. Sounding great as ever here and on the last release, Monkey Puzzle. Paul Raymond and his keyboard and rythum/accoustic guitareally round out the sound. Pete Way's bass playing is missed, but layed out due to illness. Get well soon, Pete! Peter Pichl does a very nice job on bass. The music here is hard and melodic. Very well played and great lyric writing.
To the reviewer who said this is the best release since Mechanix. That is a proposterous statement! Making Contact, High Stakes and Dangerous Men were not really too bad. Then ther's the classic Walk on Water, Covenent and the superb Sharks. Not to mention recent classics, You are Here and Monkey Puzzle. You should rethink your statement. $14.69 Initial pressings of GOOD TO BE BAD included a bonus disc containing 7 live tracks and a video. Issued more than a decade after Whitesnake's previous studio outing, 2008's GOOD TO BE BAD finds frontman David Coverdale leading a band of new hard-rock recruits. Easily one of the heaviest albums recorded by the blooze-leaning British act, the album benefits from Coverdale's well-weathered vocals and the twin guitar work of Doug Aldrich (Dio) and Reb Beach (Winger, Dokken), as evinced on the fierce opener, "Best Years." Good to Be Bad marks Whitesnake's 30th anniversary as a band -- though frontman David Coverdale is the only original member. It's their first studio album since 1998's Restless ...
| | Michael Schenker In The Midst Of Beauty CD (2008)

$12.19 Michael Schenker is truly a legend. From helping form the Scorpions to his stint with UFO, his guitar prowess has been electrifying from the beginning. This brand new recording perfectly captures the MSG aesthetic and mystique, which makes sense as 4/5ths of the original MSG are back in the fold! Singer Gary Barden, drummer Simon Phillips and keyboardist Don Airey join Schenker and bassist Neil Murray for one of their best (and most highly anticipated) recordings and a return to classic MSG form. Pushing the boundaries of hard rock, heavy metal and blues rock to ...

| | Sleeper Behind Every Mask CD (2009)
Visitor
$10.45 On BEHIND EVERY MASK, his 2009 outing on Mush Records, the electronica/hip-hop artist known as Sleeper (not to be confused with the defunct Britpop band) offers up a collection of gritty, moody tracks. Like a minimalist DJ Shadow, Sleeper builds songs around unusual beats and a dark atmosphere, as evinced on the haunting "Frequency Winds" and the ominous "Failure to Communicate." Behind Every Mask is an album title that just oozes sneaking suspicion and paranoia, and Sleeper digs deep into those feelings, turning them into gritty and often witty songs that straddle the line between instrumental hip-hop and electronic music. Sleeper uses a fairly limited palette -- a few live drums, lots of programmed ones, synths that are thick and fuzzy or clear and pure, and the occasional guitar or spoken word sample -- to create a variety of sounds that conjure dense, urban dystopias and the stories inside them. His way with beats, from "Abdomen"'s acrobatic drumming to "B.F.U."'s cascading rhythms, give Behind Every Mask's tracks a real sense of momentum. This is especially important, considering that Sleeper's compositions are pretty linear, usually building on a single theme or mood for the duration. That said, he explores each mood to its fullest, imbuing it with lots of personality. "Witch Hunt"'s vocal snippets suggest eavesdropping on shortwave radio, its woozy synth melody making it even uneasier listening; "9th Grade" is equally paranoid and pretty, with remarkable ...

$16.45 Faruq Z. Bey (born Jessie Davis)[1] is a saxophonist/composer from Detroit, Michigan, USA. He is best known for his work with Griot Galaxy. Griot played hard free jazz with distinct compositions, often by Bey. Odd meters and polyrhythms were a frequent feature of Griot tunes, which would give way to free sections. Originally started in 1972, Griot Galaxy settled into its most stable line-up around 1980, when Bey was joined by saxophonists David McMurray and Anthony Holland, as well as bassist Jaribu Shahid and drummer Tani Tabal. Popular in Detroit for a Free Jazz band (often pulling audiences of a few hundred people), Griot toured Europe in the mid-80s and was at the height of its international acclaim when Bey was in a serious motorcycle accident that left him in a coma.Almost a decade passed before Bey returned to performing. He re-emerged with an all woodwind ensemble called The Conspiracy Winds Ensemble. He began to play in Speaking in Tongues and Hakim Jami's Street Band. He joined forces with The Northwoods Improvisers, who've largely devoted their last several releases to Bey's music. His frequent collaborators, saxophonists Michael Carey and Skeeter Shelton, join him on most of the Northwoods Improviser's recordings. He also currently plays in Kindred- a quartet with Kennith Green, Kevin Callaway and Joel Peterson- and in Odu Afrobeat Orchestra. Some of his most noted releases are: "Kins", "Opus Krampus" and "Live at the DIA" with Griot Galaxy and "Auzar" and "Ashirai Pattern" with The Northwoods Improvisers.Bey has published two books of poetry, Year of the Iron Sheep and Etudes in Wanton Nesses, in addition to a theory book Toward ...
