Snakebite barely qualifies as a Whitesnake album. Vocalist David Coverdale had just assembled the band, and in fact, half of the songs contained here had been recorded by the singer nearly a year before for an abandoned solo outing. With this in mind, one can understand why most of the cuts either suffer from a lack of creative direction, the players' limited musical interaction, or both. While their theatrical stage show (which featured the singer getting his head chopped off by a guillotine) may have made Alice Cooper a household name, the material on BILLION DOLLAR BABIES is so exceptional there is no danger of the music being overshadowed by gimmicks. The album became Cooper's biggest selling release, but it would prove the last effort by the original incarnation of the Alice Cooper band (who would up split a year later). But the group hits the mark completely here, combining the raw garage rock of earlier albums with a glossier production, but with plenty of edge, grit, and sleaze still at the music's core.
While mission statement "No More Mr. Nice Guy" is the best-known song, the rest of the album is just as strong. The title track features a backing vocal by Donovan and a mammoth backbeat from drummer Neal Smith, while sweet melodicism plays an important role in "Generation Landslide" and "Mary Ann." Cooper's rock-and-shock aesthetic can heard in the future concert staples "Sick Things" and "I Love the Dead," giving the sleek sound of the album a wonderfully seamy underbelly. Pete Yorn recorded BREAK UPin 2006 on the heels of one, but it sat on the shelf until 2009, appearing just a matter of months after BACK & FORTH, and a year after his duet partner, Scarlett Johannson, cast as Brigitte Bardot to Yorn's Serge Gainsbourg, made an awkwardly arty splash with a Tom Waits covers album, but the album that really casts a shadow over this is VOL. 1, the 2008 record by She & Him, the teaming of M. Ward and indie actress Zooey Deschanel. Yorn and Johannson cut their album long before She & Him, but surfacing in its wake, they can't help but seem a bit like the polished, polite answer to the twee, precious charms of Zooey & M. Ward. BREAK UP does trump VOL. 1 conceptually, chronicling the dissolution of a romance as a series of duets, and Scarlett is a more-than-worthy foil to Yorn.

I spent a lot of time on this record. We tracked most of the drums and bass over a weekend in June of 2008 and I have been piecing it together since.As I was finishing mixing the record I heard an intriguing story about a photograph taken by The Voyager 1 Spacecraft. After The Voyager had completed it's primary mission, NASA had it turn around when it reached the edge of our solar system to take a picture of Earth.
