BASIE SWINGS STANDARDS is a collection culled from the Count Basie band's late 1970s and early `80s recordings for Pablo Records. Most songs are standards from early in the 20th century, but they're rendered in the Basie post-`50s style--lots of joyfully brash brass, rich reeds, and brisk, modern swing. While devotees of modern Basie will no doubt have some or all of this material, BASIE SWINGS STANDARDS will be of importance to newcomers to and casual fans of big-band jazz.
Personnel: Freddie Green (guitar); Chris Woods, Kenny Hing, Eric Dixon, Danny Turner , Jimmy Forrest, Johnny Williams , Bobby Plater, Charlie Fowlkes (flute, saxophone); Lin Biviano, Waymon Reed, Dale Carley, Willie Cooke, Jim Crawford, Jack Feierman, Dave Stahl, Pete Minger, Ray Brown , Frank Szabo, John Thomas , Sonny Cohn, Bob Summers, Bobby Mitchell, Paul Cohen (trumpet); Mel Wanzo, Curtis Fuller, Mitchell Wood, Dennis Wilson , Fred Wesley, Grover Mitchell , Al Grey, Bill Hughes (trombone); Count Basie (piano); James Leary, John Clayton, John Duke, Keter Betts, Cleveland Eaton (bass instrument); Dennis Mackrel, Gregg Field, Mickey Roker, Butch Miles (drums).
Record Collector (magazine) (p.98) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t includes the Basie orchestra's dynamic renditions of swing classics like 'Jumpin' At The Woodside' adn 'One O'Clock Jump.'" Basie Swings Standards songs
$13.45 This session recorded in 2003 features the music of Henry Mancini played by a Quintet led by Phil Woods on alto saxophone and Carl Saunders on trumpet and flugelhorn. Featuring over 75 minutes of music the CD reprises some of Henry Mancini's greatest jazz compositions including The Pink Panther, Mr. Lucky and tunes from the Peter Gunn TV series soundtrack recordings."Even more than nine years after his death, Henry Mancini is the most famous of all film composers. His film writing was jazz-oriented without being jazz, and his arrangements were both subservient to a movie's story (as all scores must be) and strong enough to stand on their own apart from the picture." "One of the all-time great alto-saxophonists and a major force in the jazz scene since at least 1954, Phil Woods is not only one of the masters of bebop but a musician who through the years has extended the idiom through his personal voice, inventive repertoire and inspired settings." "Carl Saunders is not as world famous yet due to his valuable but underrated work as a lead trumpeter in big bands and being based in Los Angeles. But his playing on his three solo albums and the Jazzed Media CD "Phil Urso and Carl Saunders Salute Chet Baker" show just how tremendous a trumpeter he is, ranking near the top of his field." "Listeners will have no difficulty having fun listening to the infectious performances on one of the finest ...

Basie Swings Standards CD music
$8.29 (MP3 Available for Download) Count Basie proves there are indeed second acts in American life. The pianist led one of the most popular jazz-oriented big bands in the 1930s, but his outfit of the `50s had a tremendous resurgence (that then carried into the `60s). Originally issued ...

| | Count Basie Kansas City, Vol. 6 CD (1981)
Basie Swings Standards music CDs
$13.95 (MP3 Available for Download) Late in his career, Basie began casually putting together small groups for the Pablo Records label, naming them in accordance with the number of participating musicians. KANSAS CITY 6 represents but one of these groups. Don't be fooled, though. Basie's Kansas City projects were neither thrown-together jam bands nor the result of a tired old man on his way out.
On this particular album, we hear the legendary pianist/band leader in fine form. Very few jazz musicians create the light and buoyant swing that Basie does. His understated pianistic style never trounces over soloists but offers ...
| | Jesper Thilo Strike Up The Band CD (2000)
Basie Swings Standards songs
$9.05 (MP3 Available for Download) The title of this album is a bit off the mark, implying that the session will be pretty much devoted to up-tempo traditional jazz. Not so. While there are barnburners, they are balanced with very good melodic ballad renderings. Even the up-tempo material has character and substance, not at all like the mindless blowing that one finds too often in CD bins these days.
Jesper Thilo is Denmark's most famous sax man, and one of its most prominent jazz players irrespective of instrument. Living in Denmark, he's had the opportunity to perform with many top-flight jazz musicians. With its traditional support of jazz, that country has always been a favorite spot for top American musicians to visit and, for several, to settle in. Basically, Thilo is from the same Lester Young school for tenors as Brew Moore, who was a resident ...
