Extras: All new commentary with Leslie Caron, Nina Foch, Arthur Freed, Patricia Ward Kelly, and more. Also includes the brand new featurette, American in Paris: A Portrait in Style, Archival Shorts, 2002 PBS Documentary Gene Kelly: Anatomy of a Dancer and S Wonderful: The Making of An American in Paris.

Musical about a young G.I. who remains in Paris after World War II to study art. Jerry Mulligan wants to live the life of the great painters -- holed up in a Montmartre garret, starving for his art. But the reality is less romantic than the fantasy, so when a rich American gallery owner offers to support him, he agrees -- even if the bargain means joining her entourage of lovers. Then he meets Lise, a young French girl, and instantly falls in love. Unfortunately, she's already engaged to Henri Bourel, an older man who saved her from the Nazis. But when Henri discovers that she cares for another, he gracefully exits, leaving the young couple to a life together.

One of the greatest of 1950s screen musicals is a happy collaboration between the grace and athleticism of Gene Kelly and the colorful palette of director Vincente Minnelli. An American G.I. lingers in Paris after the war to study painting and soon falls in love with Leslie Caron, an engaged demoiselle, much to the chagrin of his romance-minded benefactress. This classic musical boasts a 17-minute avant-garde ballet choreographed by Kelly to George Gershwin's unbeatable music. AN AMERICAN IN PARIS garnered eight Academy Award nominations and six wins, including Best Picture and Best Story and Screenplay. Kelly won a special Oscar for his inimitable achievements.

AN AMERICAN IN PARIS was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1993. Gene Kelly received an Honorary Academy Award in 1951 "in appreciation of his versatility as an actor, singer, director and dancer, and specifically for his brilliant achievements in the art of choreography on film." Film debut for French actress-dancer Leslie Caron, who was discovered by Gene Kelly. The film also featured the American in Paris Ballet Performers. Gene Kelly's paintings were done by Gene Grant. Irene Sharaff designed the costumes for the ballet sequence and Walter Plunkett designed them for the Beaux Arts ball sequence.

Previously I owned this film on a shoddy DVD that came in that ugly snapper-case and was no bettr than a VHS. This is the version to own. The colors are sharp, details are crisp, and there are more extras than I will ever get through. And Gene Kelly dances up a storm!

3 stars No comparison....
I previously had this movie on a rather shoddy DVD that came in that damn snapper-case; it was no better than the VHS version. The Blu-Ray is light years beyond all earlier versions. Occasionally the film gets overly sappy and cute, but forgive it and enjoy the eye-popping colors and wonderful dancing of Gene Kelly.

Andrew Crocker-Harris, "The Crock" as his students call him, knows he isn't loved like the fictional Mr. Chips, but in the span of just over a day he is forced as Robert Burns would say, "to see ourselves as others see us." Michael Redgrave, the father of the British theatrical family and himself a former schoolmaster, brings a quiet resolve to the role of a man coming to terms with the failure of his life. His much younger wife, Jean (Jean Kent), has come to the end of her frustration with his failure to rise in his profession and becomes bitter when illness forces his early retirement. When a small act of kindness by one of his students lets him see how he has never imparted to them his own love of the classics, he begins to reflect on the rest of his life. His marital problems, confessed in terms far less explicit than are common to today, is perhaps even more effective for its verbal restraint. Anthony Asquith, who directed Redgrave in THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, takes a successful contemporary play by Terance Rattigan and provides a seamless transition to the screen. Jean Kent strikes just the right note as a woman who, in the name of honesty, has become heartlessly cruel, adding to the pleasure of watching Michael Redgrave's ...

After ten years in Hollywood, where he made the acclaimed LETTER FROM AN UNKNOWN WOMAN, Max Ophüls returned to France. His first film, LA RONDE, is taken from Arthur Schnitzler's play REIGEN, which features a series of interlocking love stories set in Vienna at the turn of the 19th Century. Ophüls added the visual metaphor of the merry-go-round and a raconteur (Anton Walbrook), who comments on love as the characters move from one partner to another. A student seduces a chambermaid, then, filled with confidence, has an affair with a married woman who goes home to her husband, who then goes off to his mistress--and so on until the circle comes back to the beginning. The situations and dialogue were considered quite risqué at the time and the film was actually banned in America. Now, afternoon TV soap operas are more graphic, but not as witty or subtle in their approach to the vicissitudes of l'amour. Ophüls directs with a fluid grace and Simon Signoret, Danielle Darrieux, and Alfred Gelin give outstanding performances. Schnitzler's work returned to popularity in the late 1990s with David Hare's play THE BLUE ROOM, another adaptation of REIGEN, staring Nichole Kidman. His short stories were also the source material for Stanley Kubrick's EYES WIDE SHUT. Simone Signoret, Anton Walbrook, ...

Recorded in the late-1950s, the John Coltrane of BLACK PEARLS is not the shining, legendary beacon of free jazz he eventually became by the mid-'60s. At the time of PEARLS, Coltrane was a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, and this was one of his solo ventures. Like many Prestige discs of this period, it's a straight-ahead hard-bop jam session. Featuring sterling accompaniment by Red Garland (also then ...

Recorded live at The Five Spot, New York, New York on July 16, 1961. Reed player/composer/arranger Eric Dolphy was, in the early '60s, in the vanguard of the free jazz movement, yet his music was not as avant-garde as some of his contemporaries'. The language was still bop, but Dolphy added new vocabulary and syntax, playing with a freer, more vocalized approach over more or less standard chord changes. Recorded in 1961, the AT THE FIVE SPOT series of albums documents what may have been Eric Dolphy's finest group ever, as well as one of that era's best working bands. "Fire Waltz" is a crackling mid-tempo piece, where Dolphy's boldly unfettered yet focused alto points toward ...
