Two major figures of English jazz, drummer Jack Parnell and guitarist Vic Lewis co-led a band in the 1944-1945 time frame. This album compiles the entire recorded output of the outfit, all recorded for the Parlophone label. Many members were World War II RAF veterans ready to get back to work playing jazz. Their exuberance at being back is heard on all the sessions. They played swing and traditional jazz, a mix of Chicago and New Orleans with a touch of British flavor thrown in. The group worked well in ensemble and had outstanding individual playing, as demonstrated on "Prince of Wails," featuring Billy Riddick on trumpet and Dick Katz on piano. Although born in Baltimore, MD, Katz spent some time playing in England before returning to the U.S. Lewis was to come to the U.S. much later to produce bop-oriented albums with West Coast jazzmen, and Parnell joined the Ted Heath band. The sessions were not limited to up-tempo material by any means. There's a traditional blues number, "Mean Old Bed Bug Blues," with Vic Lewis taking the vocal, with Riddick once again on trumpet. Riddick had an exceptionally clean, pure sound which contrasted nicely with the wail of Derek Hawkins' clarinet. This track is one of the finest on this 24-track set. The play list also is one of the reasons this album is attractive. In addition to well-known traditional swing tunes like "Ja-Da," there are some excellent lesser-known gems such as the Katz/Parnell/Lewis "Dick's Boogie" and Johnny Mince's "Johnny's Idea." It would be easy to relegate these sessions as items of historical interest and then dismiss them. But in fact the music and the performances hold up very well and should be welcomed by fans of traditional swing. ~ Dave Nathan Vic Lewis Singin' The Blues Songs Singin' The Blues Review

Singin' The Blues album
$15.05 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner ...

Singin' The Blues songs
$12.79 For Brigitte DeMeyer, it was only a matter of time. She was already one of the most discussed artists in the Americana movement. Her work stirred accolades in national media. She was tapped to open shows for Marc Cohn, Dan Fogelberg - and Bob Dylan. She wrote songs as weavers thread tapestries, her most vivid colors being a Southern feel, a churchy soulfulness in her vocals, and a way with words that bore comparison to literature as easily as to the best contemporary lyrics. Yet she had one more line to cross, the one that lay between all that she had accomplished and Nashville, in some respects her spiritual home yet a place she had never recorded until this year. The result, Red River Flower, is a turning point in her journey, taking her closer to the sound toward which she has been working for years. Again, it comes down to timing: the confluence between her creative growth and her decision to mark it by gathering some of her favorite collaborators, including producer Brady Blade and Americana legend Buddy Miller, along with guitarist Mike Henderson, steel and dobro player Al Perkins, keyboardist Phil Madeira, bassist Chris Donohue and backing singers Regina McCrary and Gayle Mayes - musicians whose empathy for DeMeyer's songs impresses nearly as much as the songs themselves. 'This album is closer to my heart than anything I've done before,' she insists. 'It represents my voice the best, and when you hear it more clearly then the lyrics have that much more meaning. 'Those who follow DeMeyer will recognize her artistry on this album while noticing as well that it has risen to a higher level. 'Being in Nashville affected me,' she says. 'When I'd worked before with Buddy, sometimes it was done by mailing music files back and forth. But to have him show up and be in the studio with me and the other players is a completely different experience. 'That's evident from the first notes of the track, 'Shepherd. ' The groove is relaxed but irresistible, sweetened by rustic dobro fills from Al Perkins and down-home harmonies on the chorus prayer: ...
