Grand album
$16.39 Dylan once hand-picked Tito Larriva's Plugz to back him up on Dave Letterman's show. But when the multi-culti punk group morphed into the Cruzados, Larriva's rock career went off-road. Tarantism is his return -- a blues-rock study on bugs and the angel of death. At its best, Tito & Tarantula sound like a dark, spaghetti western theme band, the Stones ("Slippin' & Slidin'"), Cream, and the folky Led Zeppelin ("Sweet Cycle") all in one. When Larriva sings instead of screams, he sounds like Jack Bruce, as on "Back to the House" and "Jupiter." It's just OK, but Larriva is the kind of guy you want to root for: audiences cheered big time when his Desperado character shot Quentin Tarantino. As a bit-part actor and composer, you can't better his hip filmography -- from Repo Man to Freeway to She's So Lovely. He also played Hammy in the original Pee Wee's Playhouse. ~ Denise Sullivan

Grand CD music
$9.09 By the late '90s Sony had begun to introduce budget sets that raided their vaults and often arbitrarily grouped songs together for mass consumption. Hits of the 80s, Vol. 1 and Forever Soul were two of the worst offenders. By 2001, the label decided to make better use of the CD time constraints by extending the running time of each disc. Make no mistake, Disco Dance is far from comprehensive set; often the tracks aren't even disco. This overview mines the up-tempo 1974-1999 tracks that first appeared on CBS, then Sony labels, and whatever songs the label acquired over the years. Some of the better tracks, like Gary's Gang's "Keep on Dancing," Jackie Moore's "This Time Baby," Denience Williams' "I Got the Next Dance," and the potent yet nearly gauche the Isley Brothers "It's a Disco Night" certainly don't usually make like-minded compilations. While far from the Studio 54 days, Der Kommissar's "After the Fire" and the Romantics "Talking in ...

Grand music CDs
$14.89 Although Peter Gabriel received the greatest-hits treatment with 1990's SHAKING THE TREE, the 13 years following that collection made it clear that another, more comprehensive retrospective was needed. During this time, Gabriel recorded only two official solo albums, US and UP, but the avant-pop icon also pursued other audio/visual projects, such as OVO, his contribution to London's massive Millennium Dome exhibit. The two-disc compilation HIT pairs his post-2000 work with his pioneering songs from 1977-1992, and the result is a remarkable musical document.
While HIT features the majority of the classic songs from SHAKING THE TREE, it ...

Grand album
$15.35 British R&B hasn't been as huge a phenomenon as British rock, but even so, there are many reasons to applaud England's contributions to R&B. England spends more money on R&B than any other country in the world except the United States, and England has been the home of Lisa Stansfield, Hot Chocolate, Soul II Soul, Caron Wheeler, Imagination, Loose Ends, Junior, and Neneh Cherry (among many others). Another reason to applaud England's contributions to R&B is Incognito, who have been around since 1979. Incognito's work has generally had more to do with soul, funk, urban and acid jazz than with flat-out disco, but on More Tales Remixed, a variety of mixologists give songs from their 2008 release Tales from the Beach an overtly disco appeal. Of course, the word "disco" sounds very dated in the 21st century; it has a strong mid- to late-'70s connotation. But truth be told, disco didn't end with the 1970s; it simply diversified, became more high tech and acquired new names like dance-pop, deep house, Latin freestyle, and Hi-NRG. Not all post-'70s dance music is ...

$14.55 CORALINE is the latest stop-motion animated motion picture by Annie Award-winning director Henry Selick (NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH). Based on the bestselling novel by Neil Gaiman (STARDUST, MIRRORMASK), CORALINE cleverly twists the ALICE IN WONDERLAND theme, by providing a lonely girl with a wide-eyed, adventure-ridden alternate reality. While the 3-D stop-motion ...
