Any band that's been around for a decade will show some progression, and Japan's majestic Mono is no exception. True to form, on the heels of 10 years of playing together, they've recorded their most elaborately orchestrated album yet. A sweeping, cinematic set of six songs, HYMN TO THE IMMORTAL WIND finds the band collaborating with a large chamber orchestra, lending them a dramatic gravitas that they could not achieve on their own. Songs like the gorgeous "Ashes in the Snow" wash over the listener with delicately placed textures that wax and wane, telling a story without words, but relying on mood and tone to broadcast incredible emotion. The somber, atypically short "Follow the Map" utilizes spare guitar and delicate piano to build tension until a crescendo of strings enters to carry it gently aloft. Though still rooted in rock, Mono's music has more in common with classical compositions at this point.

Alternative Press (pp.114-115) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The group use an auxiliary string section judiciously, contrasting triumphant flashes of orchestral grandeur with simple piano melodies isolated in sonic white space." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.52) - "Working with a full orchestra and long time friend and collaborator Steve Albini, much of this is breathtaking....An album of beauty, pathos and wonder." Clash (magazine) (p.112) - "Recorded with their close friend Steve Albini the album combines vast orchestrations with an almost terrifying intimacy." Signal To Noise (magazine) (p.57) - "'Everlasting Light' closes the recording with a stirring celestial vision: sustained guitar melodies are haloed by violins, then buoyed to a thrilling finale by a wall of glorious E-major." Hymn To The Immortal Wind songs
$16.09 Recorded live at the Atlanta Internation Pop Festival, Atlanta, Georgia, July 3 & 4, 1970. Includes liner notes by Kirk West.
The 1970 Atlanta International Pop Festival was one of the first big rock festivals of the decade, beating out the Isle of Wight by over a month. It was also home turf for the Allman Brothers, who were invited to play the opening and closing sets of the three-day event. In retrospect, it's interesting to note how--despite their penchant for extended jams--the Allmans were somewhat at odds with the flower-child ethic of the day; after the MC delivers a classic ...

Hymn To The Immortal Wind music CDs

| | Street Light Suzie Red River Revival CD (2009)
Hymn To The Immortal Wind album
$13.15 It’s hard to convey the power of a live show through a CD, but Street Light Suzie pulls it off with seemingly no effort. Their debut album, “Red River Revival” is a raucous jaunt through everything that makes Rock-N-Roll fun. Vocalist Wiley Ross, bassist Ben Evans and drummer Chuy Trevino team up to make music that hooks the listener from the start. Bluesy and harsh, it’s almost as if they all camped out at the “crossroad” and drank Satan under the table. This band could have started the “sex, drugs and rock and roll” cliché, had they been born earlier. Ross’ voice is like an old razor blade: rusty but sharp, and very likely infectious. From the opening track, “Long Live the Dead”, Street Light Suzie assaults the listener with thunderous melodies. It’s hard not to respect a band that pulls off songs with titles such as: “Cannibal Farm”, “Bag ...
