Bends songs Produced by Elvis Costello, this self-titled 1979 debut quickly became gospel to the wave of ska then sweeping England. Infusing the catchy, jumpy music developed by artists like the Skatalites and Prince Buster a generation before them with punk's youthful disenfranchisement, bands like the Specials, the Selecter and Madness gave birth to a movement, one which strove for such noble goals as racial unity (then a particularly sore issue in Britain) and non-violence. THE SPECIALS states these ideals magnificently, wrapping them in tunes bursting with energy--tight, sincere and masterful. Ska's musical style is an easy one to discern--syncopated rhythm guitar, infectious rhythms, horn sections a-go-go; vocals often reach the level of a rant, and the lyrics are usually of utmost import. The album's opener and by far its most recognized tune "A Message To You Rudy" spoke frankly and directly to those youngsters tempted towards the gangster life. "Do the Dog" is more outright social statement--an earnest appeal not to fall into life's easy, safe categories, be they military or social. Bends album for sale The last album the Replacements recorded as a full-fledged band effort, 1989's DON"T TELL A SOUL featured new guitarist Slim Dunlap replacing the departed Tommy Stinson's punk-inspired fervor with more subtle sonic flavors. At the time, fans found it too "soft," but in hindsight it's a solid, mature effort featuring some of the band's most melodic, well crafted tunes. Such songs as "Achin' to Be," and "I'll Be You" are sparkling, effervescent pop-rockers boasting both hooks and bite. Bends buy CD music Pablo Honey's "Collectors Edition" features the original album on disc one, and demos, rarities, live performance recordings and a 1992 BBC Radio One session on disc two. Before the breakthrough that was THE BENDS and the colossal OK COMPUTER, there was the quietly magnificent PABLO HONEY. "Creep" was the surprise hit single in the UK, but even that gave scant indication of how special this band would become. Benefiting from a raw production, the debut was undoubtedly less slick and accomplished than subsequent work, although Thom Yorke's vulnerable but impressive vocal styling was already in place on songs such as "Stop Whispering." Many of the compositions were somewhat simplistic, but in terms of musical maturity Radiohead were clearly years ahead of their time.
