| | John Scofield Piety Street CD John Scofield Discography of CDs
Guitarist John Scofield has excelled in assorted jazz contexts, from straight-ahead jazz (Charles Mingus) to funky fusion (George Duke, Miles Davis). Throughout his career, Scofield has never stood still and his latest venture, PIETY STREET, sees him accenting the bluesy side of his musical personality. The roots of jazz, blues, and much else can be heard and felt in gospel music, and STREET consists mostly of early 20th-century gospel standards lovingly re-invented. Scofield and his compatriots--Jon Cleary on keys, ex-Meters bassist George Porter, and drummer Ricky Fataar--situate these tunes into a cleanly swinging, cooking jazz context, with some occasional New Orleans fire `n' spunk (such as on "Never Turn Back" and the original "It's A Big Army") in the mix.
Arranger: John Scofield.
Personnel: John Scofield (guitar); Jon Cleary (vocals, organ); John Boutté (vocals); George Porter, Jr. (bass guitar); Shannon Powell (drums, percussion); Ricky Fataar (drums).
Audio Mixer: James Farber.
Down Beat (p.58) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he gospel tunes of PIETY STREET seem a natural part of Scofield's contoured playing field. Working his well refined jack-of-all-trades role, he glides into N'awlins mode..." JazzTimes (p.100) - "For the project, Scofield virtually overhauls his style, jettisoning contemporary technical aids and displays of virtuosity for a straightforward blues-based approach brimming with economy, joyfulness and soul." | | John Scofield This Meets That CD (2007)
Piety Street songs
$10.69 This Meets That finds guitarist John Scofield looking both backward and forward. It's his first recording for the Emarcy label, but for the occasion Scofield resurrected the trio he'd used on several previous albums, most recently 2004's EnRoute: bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Bill Stewart. Never one to rest on his laurels, Scofield has throughout his career applied his virtuosity to several different streams of jazz, ranging from fusion-esque to orchestral to straight bop. This Meets That is something of a mixed bag. The opening track, the Scofield-penned "The Low Road," is a swinging funk jam that's one of several tunes on the record to employ a four-piece horn section. It's a smoker of a track, with Scofield often teasing with distortion but never straying so far away that it might be ...

| | Bill Dana My Name...Jose Jimenez CD (1960)
Piety Street music CDs
$10.45 Bill Dana had a long and successful career as a comedy writer (winning an Emmy Award for his work on the classic sitcom All in the Family), but he'll always be best remembered for his character Jose Jimenez, a slightly tongue-tied man with a thick Hispanic accent who first popped up in "Man on the Street" bits on The Steve Allen Show in the late '50s. By 1960, Dana's work as Jimenez on television and in nightclubs had become popular enough that Kapp Records signed him to a recording contract, and My Name...Jose Jimenez was divided between a collection of sketches originally broadcast on The Steve Allen Show and a 17-minute "press conference" in which Dana spontaneously answers questions posed to Jimenez by a number of comics posing as reporters. A few decades later, Dana's dialect humor might seem racist to some, but part of what made the character funny was despite his name and his accent, Dana invariably toyed with the character's nationality; depending on the bit, Jimenez could be a British arranger accompanying Diana Dors, an Irish theatrical director, a farmer from the ...
