Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Sensor Matic The sixth of the James Bond spy series, and the only one starring Australian star George Lazenby, has 007 once more facing down one of his archest of enemies, Blofeld, whose newest idea for the world's destruction is via germ warfare. In this stand-out 007 adventure, Bond again faces off with Ernst Stavro Blofield (his formidable enemy from YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, played here by Telly Savalas rather than Donald Pleasance). This time, the super spy is infiltrating Blofield's installation high in the Swiss Alps. The Austalian-born George Lazenby briefly but amply fills Connery's shoes as he finds himself kilted and surrounded by a gorgeous and sex-starved gaggle of women on retreat. Diana Rigg (THE AVENGERS) plays James Bond's love interest and becomes his only wife in the history of the series. Although Lazenby is not one of the more famous Bond actors, ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE remains appreciated for its relatively gritty and angst-ridden tone. In fact, many true connoisseurs consider it to be the best film in the series. George Lazenby takes over Sean Connery's iconic role and delivers a darker Bond. Shot in Technicolor and Panavision.
Originally rated M by the MPAA. When the rating was discontinued, the film was re-rated PG.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service Movie Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) the new bond is a little different This is the only Bond film which has this actor playing Bond. He is a bit more down to earth and not a sophisticated as the other actors that play Bond. Still we like him better than Roger Moore. it has a twist that he gets married. Enthusiastic but untrained `Service' There are bits of a good movie in `On Her Majesty's Secret Service,' an effort to turn the boyish James Bond fantasties into something more mature.
Unfortunately, those good intentions are partially undone by some peculiar casting, and by a slavish recreation of Ian Fleming's confused book.
Despite these problems, though, OMSS is entertaining for its action sequences and dramatic settings. As the most offbeat of the Bond movies, it may be more enjoyable for people who can take or leave the other films in the series, rather than for true fans.
Notably in this movie, Australian model George Lazenby gamely but unsuccessfully replaced Sean Connery as Bond. Lazenby's Bond is a bit less full of himself than Connery's, but that wasn't true for the novice actor, who alienated just about everyone on the set and behind the scenes. He could have used the support, because while Lazenby shows some promise, he's wooden in many of the scenes, and his dialogue had to be dubbed when Bond went undercover as Sir Hilary Bray.
Still, Lazenby at least looks the part, and as acting debuts by models go, his is light years beyond, say, Cindy Crawford's.
In this movie, Bond supposedly falls for a troubled Mob contessa, half Corsician and half English. She's played here as entirely British by Diana Rigg, who seems completely unrelated by blood or style to Gabriele Ferzetti, dubbed in as her father.
The strapping but undeveloped Diana Rigg is physically miscast; she's far too boyish to compete with other Bond heroines. And while she's otherwise a good actress, Rigg is does a poor job here of conveying the ennui essential to the spoiled character.
Even worse, Lazenby and Rigg did not get along off screen, and their on-screen chemistry is variable. (Hard feelings persist: Rigg doesn't even appear in the `making of' extra session on the disc.)
And even when their characters do seem to connect, the supposed love story is undermined when Bond resumes his Tomcat ways.
Telly Savalas is an casting interesting choice, offering a particularly petulant take on arch-villain Blofeld. As someone concerned about his place in high society, you would think that we would work on losing that Flatbush accent.
Still, Savalas and henchwoman Ilse Steppat interject some of the life that's missing from the other performances. Savalas and Rigg play off each other well, showing what's missing from her scenes with Lazenby.
The movie gets stronger as it goes along, and the last third is very exciting. The downbeat ending is meant to be heart-breaking, but it's hard to accept James Bond in love, and Lazenby can't quite pull it off.
This isn't a great movie by any means, but it's more ambitious than most in the Bond series, and it maintains a lot of their strong points in action and pacing.
Like other discs in the Bond series, this one is very well produced, with excellent transfers and some good extras. Submitted by a reviewer (Manhattan, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
Bond at his best in "Secret Service" The most underrated of all Bond films, is also, by most fans, argueably the best. Due to financial scuffles between Sean Connery and United Artists, Connery backed out of this installment. Lazenby is decent as 007 (can't quite fill Connery's shoes, but, he is better than Roger Moore). Dianna Rigg is electrifying as Tracy, bringing strength and intelligence that no other Bond girl has had in any of the other films, past or present (the best Bond girl name goes to Pussy Galore, because...well, you'll figure it out). Telly Savalas is absolute "Bond Classic" as Blofeld, much better than Donald Plescences' performance in "You Only Live Twice". The last half of the movie itself is absolute non-stop action.
