Hammerfall have had plenty of lineup changes since 1993, and 2009's No Sacrifice, No Victory finds the Swedish headbangers unveiling yet another new lineup. This time, the participants are Joacim Cans on lead vocals, Oscar Dronjak and Pontus Norgren on guitar, Fredrik Larsson on bass, and Anders Johansson on drums; guitarist Stefan Elmgren is gone, and so is bassist Magnus Rosen. But despite all the personnel changes that Hammerfall have experienced along the way, their sound hasn't changed much -- and on No Sacrifice, No Victory, they maintain their 1970s/1980s-based power metal orientation. A title like No Sacrifice, No Victory is as stereotypically power metal as it gets, and larger-than-life offerings such as "Legion," "By Any Means Necessary," and "Punish and Enslave" don't run away from power metal's dungeons-and-dragons stereotypes. In fact, Hammerfall's 2009 lineup enthusiastically embraces those stereotypes -- and while the results are predictable, they are inspired more often than not. No Sacrifice, No Victory's most surprising track is an unexpected cover of the Knack's 1979 hit "My Sharona"; Hammerfall take the song out of new wave and place it in pop-metal of the Kiss/Quiet Riot/Ratt variety. "My Sharona" is the only thing on this 49-minute CD that isn't power metal, and it's an enjoyable departure from the rest of the album. No Sacrifice, No Victory isn't Hammerfall's best or most consistent release, but there are more strong tracks than weak ones -- and many die-hard Hammerfall fans in Europe will no doubt acquire the disc simply because it is by Hammerfall. ~ Alex Henderson

Kerrang (Magazine) (p.54) - "On nearly every track Hammerfall sprint with guitars blazing towards punchy chants....This sounds like Hammerfall rejuvenated, a band that has recaptured its early fire and if anything, improved upon it." | No Sacrifice, No Victory Music Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) They've changed. . You have to really buy this album and make up your own mind, but i thought this was way to different from the good old days of crimson thunder. . not a bad album, but all in all, lyrics are slightly weak but they have some serious instrumental talent (check out 'something for the ages')
New member Pontus could be to blame for the bands change but hey, i'm not pointing fingers. . much
a must have for HammerFall fans but a step in the wrong direction i think for them Submitted by DBUK (Hampshire, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
More Good Stuff More good stuff from Hammerfall. A must if you are a fan. I am not sure about the cover tune though. Not something that belongs on the album. Submitted by ajkline22 (Lafayette, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Not perfect Let me start off my saying that "No Sacrifice, No Victory" is the best Hammerfall album in the past 10 years. Songs like "By Any Means Necessary" and "To Punish and Enslave," are two of the best songs Hammerfall has written since its debut album. The spirtit of Hammerfall seems to have been renewed with the addition of Pontus Norgren (guitars) from the Poodles (also a outstanding band). Even the production seems to have a heavier punch. So why is this album a 3? Well, a 3.5 would be more accurate, but like many of the past Hammerfall albums, there is just way too much filler material. For every killer song like "Legion," there is a mediocre song like "Between Two Worlds." I hope that with Pontus in the band, Hammerfall's song writing will continue to improve. We all know that Oscar is a good songwriter, but he just can't seem to put a whole album together by himself. I also get a kick out of the Transformers references, like the album title and the song "Punish and Enslave," which if you remember, was written on the side of (cop car) Barricade in the movie. $13.69 Following the unnaturally extended layoff enforced by guitarist Oscar Dronjak's motorcycle accident in 2003, Swedish heavy metal traditionalists Hammerfall waited barely a year between their eventual return with fifth album, Chapter V in 2005, and the release of LP number six, Threshold, in 2006. This suddenly rushed release schedule -- though likely resulting from nothing more than a backlog of pre-written material, ready to come out -- takes something of an uncertain turn on Threshold's first few numbers, which comprise ...

$15.05 The unprecedented worldwide success of multinational British-based power metallers DragonForce has cast an unexpected light upon German speed metal trailblazers Helloween. Perhaps the first band to convincingly combine thrash metal intensity with the melody and majestic imagery of the NWOBHM, and by extension the blueprint upon which DragonForce based their "extreme power metal" style, Helloween were a heavy metal institution, but one ...
| | Hammerfall Chapter V: Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken CD (2005)
No Sacrifice, No Victory songs
$14.05 As helpfully pointed out in the title, Chapter V: Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken sees Swedish metal institution Hammerfall hoisting aloft the torch of power metal (unbent, unbowed, etc.) for the fifth full-studio album of their career. But "power" metal may no longer the best tag with which to describe the band, whose material here ("Blood Bound," "Fury of the Wild," "Born to Rule," etc.) is really better described as classic, vintage, or better yet, timeless heavy metal, if you will. Extract any telltale signs of studio technology or audio fidelity and the band's sound really ...
