(5 Customer Reviews)
The band's fourth original studio album, mines subject matter from czarist Russia and astral travel to out-of-body experiences and Stephen Hawking's theories on wormholes for an unrepentantly heavy aural assault that will shake the heavens. This set includes the CD plus a bonus DVD with footage from the making of the album. This title carries a parental advisory.
Atlanta's Mastodon climbed to the top of the metal heap the old-fashioned way. Taking the template for success etched by Metallica, the band captured the imagination with a series of albums that offered potent heaviness and relentless experimentation. After graduating from respected indie Relapse, they released 2006's acclaimed BLOOD MOUNTAIN, an album with a fire motif/fantasy adventure concept that opened numerous doors both commercially and critically. Their latest, CRACK THE SKYE, completes their elemental cycle by focusing on "ether," while also serving as a tale of czarist Russia. The progressive metal elements that bled into their sound on BLOOD MOUNTAIN are pushed even further here, led once more by Brann Dailor's furiously technical drumming. As Dailor goes, so goes the band, and his stick work remains some of the finest this side of Neil Peart. The crackling "Divinations" follows up the contemplative, restrained "Oblivion" with furious thrash riffs and springy dueling fretwork, and "Quintessence" wraps glittering guitar arpeggios around Dailor's impossibly percolating drums. The four-part "The Czar" is a towering epic that comes off like Rush on steroids, each part with its own distinct feel. A more mature and adventurous metal album is unlikely to be heard for a long time.
Personnel: Brent Hinds (vocals, guitar, banjo); Troy Sanders (vocals, bass synthesizer, bass instrument); Bränn Dailor (vocals, drums, percussion); Bill Kelliher (guitars).
Rolling Stone (p.81) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "CRACK THE SKYE is an awesome display....It's thrill-ride stuff that conjures not just art-metal predecessors such as Helmet but also old-school prog-rockers like Rush, Frank Zappa and Yes." Spin (p.74) - "CRACK THE SKYE is a seven-song, 50-minute phantasmagoria of psychedelic song structures, cosmic lyrics, and foreboding atmosphere. Opener 'Oblivion' provides a fiery summary of what's to come..." Alternative Press (p.116) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Guitarist Bill Kelliher's mathy riffing is simply seismic; standouts 'Oblivion' and 'Quintessence' juxtapose burning-horizon solos and must-mosh-now thunderclaps." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.50) - "The record rumbles to life with the ominous 'Oblivion,' the sound of thunder moving over mountains, and the menacing tone this strikes is prevalent throughout and best demonstrated on the title-track, which is one of the meanest and most overpowering songs you're likely to hear this year..." Q (Magazine) (p.107) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]heir most mainstream to date....A sprawling prog-metal masterpiece....Richly rewarding..." Blender (Magazine) (p.61) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "New to the mix are rich vocal harmonies, Vocoder, organ and unprecedented awesomeness....Mastodon present a prog-metal concept that would make Stephen Hawking bang his head." Pitchfork (Website) - "'The Czar,' a four-part, 11-minute epic that's still only the second-longest song on the album, gargles and fumes and lurches for nearly three minutes before launching into its first glorious steamroller riffs." Crack The Skye Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Perfection! Wow! Just when I thought Mastodon couldn't top "Blood Mountain", and here it is! A true epic that defines what Mastodon is all about. Unbelievable album! From the beginning to end this 7 song CD will take you on a journey of musical experience that only Mastodon's unique sound and incredible song writing talent can deliver! I purchased the CD/DVD version showing the band going into details about how the writing process of each song came about. They also went in depth about the gear and equipment used in the making of this incredible album. Brent, Brann, Troy & Bill, I bow to you the mighty Mastodon! This album in my opinion is...PERFECTION! Mastodon fans if you don't have this album yet, order it now! Submitted by Ron (Kent, WA USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Mastodon shows it“s Heart The first time I listen to the CD I thought the voice was weird, so much Ozzie Influence in there, but with every listen the album begins to grow and grow on me, and now I can see that is still Mastodon but depper and more mature. Show your heart is not something that you can do from the begining, requires time and experience, and that`s just what the band show in this record. Cool artwork by the way, Paul Romano Rocks Submitted by monde_hentai (Ccs, Venezuela) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

A EPIC MASTERPIECE After the awesome blood mountain and leviathan I wondered how these guys would follow those albums up. Well the answer is
crack the skye, it takes a couple of listens, but man it is a truly a epic masterpiece, not a dull moment, lots of
changes, heavy as hell guitars and great melody. Great to hear a band do its own thing and experiment a little, you dont have to scream your head off to be heavy
with this album, mastodon are for real.

Mastodon Move Forward Having become a fan after discovering the impressively diverse and technical "blood mountain", i eagerly anticipated the release of "crack the skye". The album definitely moves the band in a more progressive direction, and the astral-journey/czarist Russia concept is a cool underlying theme.Standout tracks IMO include the sprawling, epic The Czar, and the 70's prog revival The Last Baron. Great album that continues Mastodon's dominance of the forward thinking metal scene. Submitted by Jason (Northwest Indiana) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Crack The Skye CD music
$11.49 Since constant musician turnover has pretty much been the only "constant" aspect of Kylesa's career thus far, the Savannah, GA-based outfit's latest personnel department update (that being session bassist Javier Villegas) is duly noted, but glossed over so that we can focus on far more relevant issues such as the condition of the group's ever-evolving musical endeavors on album number four, 2009's Static Tensions. (Come to think of, it shouldn't that always be the case? Anyway...) Well, for starters, the band's refreshingly uncommon two-drummer, three-singer lineup continues to offer expanded possibilities for distinguishing their ...

Crack The Skye music CDs
$14.35 If there is one thing that, above all else, sets Edguy apart from so many of the Iron Maiden-worshipping, Judas Priest-loving, Queensr’che-adoring power metal revival bands that emerged in Europe in the 1990s and 2000s, it is their sense of humor. Edguy don't beat listeners over the head with it--they aren't humorous to the point of turning their work into slapstick comedy--but there is just enough humor and just enough irony in their material to keep them from taking on the ultra-serious tone that characterizes so many European power metal revival bands. And the German headbangers' sense of fun is alive and well on FUCKING WITH FIRE: LIVE, which focuses on a 2006 concert in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Available as either a two-CD set or a DVD, FUCKING WITH FIRE: LIVE documents a show that is big, boisterous, and over-the-top in a way that one expects a power metal show to be. But Edguy always find the humor in those power metal clichés and stereotypes, and their sense of humor serves them well on inspired performances of crowd-pleasers like "Tears of a Mandrake" from 2001's MANDRAKE, "King of Fools" from 2004's HELLFIRE CLUB, and "Fucking with Fire" from 2006's ROCKET RIDE. Another thing that separates Edguy from other European power metal revival bands is their appreciation of '80s pop-metal. Many European power ...

Crack The Skye album
$17.05 Formerly known as Jazzmin Bay, Jazzminshroom is the project of Atsuyuki Kono, under the name Jazzmin Riverfield, which began in the year 2000. In addition to Kono, various artists have contributed to Jazzminshroom's works and are featured on several different albums. Atsuyuki Kono also has previous producing experience with well-known Japanese music artists AI and SNOW as featured on his album BEST SELECTION.Jazzminshroom's latest album Livin' in Caleuphoria, is a creation composed of lyrics and melody that displays the perspective of a foreigner in Los Angeles. Through the eyes and mind of the artist, we hear a unique take on his experiences in California itself as well as on the lifestyle and people. The usage of āeuphoriaā in the title refers to the feeling that is brought about to many people by the atmosphere of California. Livin' in Caleuphoriaās tracklisting is as follows: Track Number 1 - Don't login me - A fictional representation that questions the California State drinking law. The song tells the story of a character that envisions the spirit of a young woman within a dream, who dies of a drug overdose as a substitution and answer to not being able to drink. The title refers to the character's disdain towards the spirit entering his dreams. Track Number 2 - My true story. - This song is written from the point of view of the songwriter, who sees a headless bird in the middle of the night and perceives it as a bad omen. Throughout the song, the artist questions the message and purpose of the bird and wonders if it is a dream that has come to life. Track Number 3 - The name is Justice - addresses the irony in the politics of unfortunate situations. Through various examples in characters created within the song, the listener is put in a position to decide what true justice really is. Track Number 4 - Save the motherland - is a look at the beauty of nature and the atmosphere around it, in contrast to the poisoned society of modern day cities. The lyrics tell of a decline in the state of the Earth and urges us to help in saving it. Track Number 5 - Friday was my payday - is a song featuring the songwriter's idea of the easygoing attitude of a character that continually shows up late to work and eventually gets fired. The song remains light hearted and laidback even though the subject of the song would normally leave a different impression. Track Number 6 - My pain, My Hero - tells of the struggle and frustration of a young person who aspires to be like his "hero", who unfortunately passes away. The song then progresses into the loss of the ...

$7.99 "American Dream" is a journey through life, living in some of America's greatest cities, and finding music every step of the way. It is Country Soul Pop 40 (Yes I made that up- but it fits!) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Listen through "American Dream" once and you'll be hooked. It's not a question of which song you'll be singing all day, but HOW MANY you'll have stuck in your head. The songs all deal with truth and focus on life in such a way that anyone can closely relate. What kind of music is it? Ask a random listener and they'll hear elements of country as the pedal steel guitar rips with emotion. In the same song the focus turns to the power chords and it's straight-up ...
