Few synth-pop outfits can boast the longevity and staying power of the Pet Shop Boys as demonstrated on their 10th studio album, YES. With its soulfulness and simplicity, YES manages to keep the duo sounding fresh while injecting a warmth too often lost in electronic music. While the album certainly doesn't break any new ground, the Pet Shop Boys' predictability is part of their charm since they long ago perfected the formula for the perfect dance anthem. Johnny Marr, who also collaborated with Pet Shop Boys vocalist Neil Tennant in Electronic, lends his guitar talents to the release; and go-to indie string arranger Owen Pallett lends a hand as well.Rolling Stone (p.66) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "On their excellent 10th album, the music leans toward the ornate, with snatches of Tchaikovsky and spaghetti-Western atmospherics enveloping the synths and house beats."

This mix is, at once, the second volume in the mix series from Frankfurt's Robert Johnson club (though it isn't numbered as such), a follow-up to Thomas' double-disc Cosmo Galactic Prism mix, and the prelude to Lindstrom & Prins Thomas II, released later the same month. For anyone remotely familiar with Thomas as a DJ, the set won't surprise -- at least not in one respect -- as it's a smooth synthesis of spaced-out tracks with mostly relaxed tempos that span several styles and four decades. Even though he pulls out Closer Musik's dazzling shuffle "Maria," just as he did on Cosmo Galactic Prism, one can sense that Thomas could supply a high-quality mix as deftly paced and layered as this one on a monthly basis. More importantly, he is one of Optimo's few rivals when it comes to using unlikely ingredients.
