Dolcenera album
$8.49 On their energetic and assured full-length debut, COSTELLO MUSIC, the Fratellis offer up a charmingly mischievous set of guitar-driven Britpop. Like rowdier cousins of the Kooks, these Scottish lads clearly look for inspiration to 1970s glam icons such as Marc Bolan and David Bowie (see the hard-charging, T. Rex-like "Flathead" and the ...

Dolcenera CD music
$10.69 A Night in Italy might really have been more accurately titled One Night 40 Years Ago in Italy. The most recent track is from 1973, and most are from the 1950s and 1960s. On the relatively sedate and charming "'A Tazza 'e Caffe" (1956), Nicola Arigliano comes across something like an Italian fadisto with a mandolin; Ferruccio Tagliavini's "Non Ti Scordar di Me" features a gorgeous accompaniment conducted (and, one suspects, arranged) by the genius Ennio Morricone; and there's simply no arguing with the charms of Domenico Modugno's "Volare." But low points include Vittorio de Sica's unforgivably moist "Munasterio 'e Santa Chiara" and Nini Rosso's rather creepy "La Ballata della Tromba." Sophia Loren does acquit herself quite nicely on "Che M'e 'Mparato a Ffa," though. This disc might make for some good, ironic fun at a hipster party. ~ Rick Anderson
This is one of the stranger entries in the A Night In... series. For one thing, it might really have been more accurately titled One Night 40 Years Ago in Italy. The most recent track is from 1973, and most are from the 1950s and 1960s. You have to wonder: has Italy really produced no popular music better than this since 1973? Because to be perfectly frank, this stuff is mostly pretty awful. Not all of it, of course: on the relatively sedate and charming "'A Tazza 'e Caffe" (1956), Nicola Arigliano comes across something like an Italian fadisto with a mandolin; Ferruccio Tagliavini's "Non Ti Scordar di Me" features a gorgeous accompaniment conducted (and, one suspects, arranged) by the genius Ennio Morricone; and there's simply no arguing with the charms of Domenico Modugno's "Volare." But the low points really do get pretty low, among them Vittorio de Sica's unforgivably moist "Munasterio 'e Santa Chiara" ...
| | Zucchero & Co. CD (2005) Digipak
Dolcenera music CDs
$14.79 Italian pop star Zucchero has never hidden his love of American music. In fact, on much of this album--a collection of his artistic collaborations dating from 1988 to 2004--his appreciation for blues and jazz, in particular, is on full display.
The most striking song on ZUCCHERO & CO. is "Dune Mosse," which pairs the singer with legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis for a dreamy track that tips its hat to Davis's revered KIND OF BLUE era. Zucchero's blues leanings are revealed on a number of tunes, most notably on "A Wonderful World" (with Eric Clapton) and "Diavolo in Me (A Devil in Me)" (with Solomon Burke), the disc's most energetic song. Regardless of the collaborator, Zucchero's full-bodied vocals stand out, particularly on emotive pop songs, including his cover of "Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime" (with Vanessa Carlton). For fans of American pop that are unfamiliar with Zucchero, this dynamic set is an ideal introduction.
