I saw this concert, but at an outdoor venue in Perth, Western Australia, in Feb 2009. My apprehension turned to pure joy as L.C. and his superb band had 15,000 people of all ages totally wrapped around their collective fingers.

For a man who only “aspired to be a minor poet” early in his career, Leonard Cohen evolved as one of the most important and influential songwriters of our time - a figure whose body of work achieves greater depths of mystery and meaning as time goes on. His songs have set a virtually unmatched standard in their seriousness and range. Sex, spirituality, religion, power - he has relentlessly examined the largest issues in vexing questions he raises. But those questions, and the journey he has traveled in seeking to address them, are the ever-shifting substance of his work, as well as the reasons why his songs never lose their overwhelming emotional force. Documentaries, awards, tribute albums and the ongoing march of artists eager to record his songs all acknowledge the peerless contribution Cohen has made to what one of his titles aptly calls “The Tower of Song.” As his old friend Lou Reed succinctly concluded during Cohen’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction: “We’re so lucky to be alive at the same time Leonard Cohen is.” This collection presents the historic performance of 25 classics drawn from Leonard Cohen’s 40-year repertory, including such favorites as “Hallelujah,” “Everybody Knows” and “Suzanne.” Live In London was recorded live on July 17, 2008 at London’s 02 Arena, and fully captures and recreates the songwriting legend’s extraordinary return to the stage on his first tour in 15 years.

Leonard Cohen - Live In London movie When it comes to the pantheon of rock & roll, Jeff Beck is no minor god--the Yardbirds guitarist has spent decades mesmerizing fans with his intricate, unstoppable technique. This 2007 performance, recorded live at Ronnie Scott’s in London, reassures that Beck is still the best: playing to a packed house of diehard fans and celebrities, he breaks off incredible renditions of "People Get Ready," "A Day in the Life," and "Little Brown Bird." The guitar hero is amazing on his own, but the duets included here--with Eric Clapton, Joss Stone, and Imogen Heap--add an extra echelon of electricity and joy. Jeff Beck has had a limitless career for over 40 years, stretching genres and consistently bringing the guitar to new levels. His guitar prowess will be visually displayed for the first time. This corresponding DVD to the Fall 2008 CD release Performing This Week....Live At Ronnie Scott's includes special guest appearances from Joss Stone, Imogen Heap, and Beck's former Yardbird's bandmate, Eric Clapton. Leonard Cohen - Live In London video After taking a decade-and-a-half vacation from live performance, septuagenarian singer/songwriter/saint Leonard Cohen returned to the stage in 2008 for a European tour. During his absence, his popularity had grown to such a degree that his London concert took place at the city's O2 Arena. With the gathered masses sounding suitably enraptured, Cohen can be heard delivering a long program that serves as both career summary and mission reiteration on this double-length live album (FYI, there's also a DVD companion release). Amazingly, Cohen sounds even more vital and intense than the last time he strode the boards, back in the mid-'90s. For all the high-powered cover versions over the years, his cavernously deep voice remains the most effective instrument for delivering his poetic incantations, looming large over a subtle, sympathetic band. He invests '60s classics like "Suzanne" and "Bird on a Wire" with new energy, underlining their continued relevance, while establishing a place in the canon for latter-day gems like "Anthem" and "Democracy," all the while punctuating his performance with carefully placed quips that show his trademark black humor to be in full effect. Leonard Cohen - Live In London film Leonard Cohen manages to garner fans from the unlikeliest of places despite his distinctly un-rock-&-roll appearance and a set of songs that veer closer to poetry than to their uneasy bedfellows in the pantheon of popular music. But viewers looking for an in-depth analysis of the man behind some of the most deeply introspective music ever recorded should look elsewhere: LEONARD COHEN: I'M YOUR MAN contains precious little insight from Cohen himself. Instead, director Lian Lunson has pieced together a warm tribute to the Canadian singer, drawing on the words of his many celebrity fans while also sharing generous amounts of footage from a Cohen tribute concert staged in 2005. The concert was filmed in Australia, with the bulk of the celebrity testimonials coming from performers at the show. The eclectic array of artists taking part include Nick Cave, Pulp's Jarvis Cocker, Martha and Rufus Wainwright, and folk legend Linda Thompson, all of whom perform unique interpretations of Cohen-penned classics such as "I'm Your Man" (Cave) and "Chelsea Hotel #2" (Rufus Wainwright). Lunson intersperses the concert footage with interviews from the stars, the most vocal and effusive praise coming from the Edge and Bono from U2, who are seen backing Cohen on a rendition of "Tower of Song" as the movie closes. Cohen himself is also given some screen time in which he muses on a number of interesting topics, but Lunson's piece is mostly designed as a straight tribute to a man who has never sat easily in the contemporary music world, much to the delight of his fans. Sure to please both die-hard Cohen fans and the newly initiated, this film is a beautiful record of captivating music and an intimate portrait of a truly singular artist. Features 14 live performances from Leonard Cohen, U2, Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Jarvis Cocker, Antony, Martha Wainwright and Beth Orton. Bonus features include exclusive never-before-seen musical performances, a conversation with Leonard Cohen, audio commentar with director Lian Lunson.

Leonard Cohen - Live In London review On August 31, 1970, Leonard Cohen was scheduled to play the third Isle of Wight Festival. Under chaotic conditions, an unkempt Cohen took the stage without hesitation at 2 a.m in a safari jacket and jeans over his pajamas, along with the Army -- producer Bob Johnson on organ, piano, and guitar; Elkin "Bubba" Fowler on bass and banjo; fiddler Charlie Daniels; guitarist Ron Cornelius; and vocalists Corlynn Hanney, Susan Mussmano, and Donna Washburn. It's all here on CD and DVD from Legacy. Cohen played songs from his first two albums, debuted a few, recited poems, and told stories. The CD captures the entire performance in nearly pristine sound. The hits (of the time) are here, the banter is here, and the entire performance by the band is so special it will leave the listener utterly satisfied. Whether it's "So Long Marianne," the poem "They Locked Up a Man," the stellar reading of "The Partisan," or the chilling version of "Famous Blue Raincoat," this is top-notch Cohen. The DVD is imperfect but is still essential viewing artistically and historically. On August 31, 1970, 35-year-old Cohen was brought onstage to perform with his band at the 3rd annual Isle of Wight music festival. Documentary filmmaker Murray Lerner was able to capture Cohen's performance and producer Teo Macero supervised the live recording. Included are 14 songs plus poetry and stories, complete performance of nearly all previously unreleased music, and interviews with Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Bob Johnston, and Kris Kristofferson, on this DVD/CD set. Liner Note Authors: Murray Lerner; Steven Berkowitz. Recording information: The East Afton Farm, Isle Of Wight Festival (08/31/1970). Editor: Mike Nuget. Photographers: Jim Marshall ; Brian Moody. Personnel: Leonard Cohen (acoustic guitar); Bob Johnston (guitar, harmonica, piano, organ); Ron Cornelius (guitar); Bubba Fowler (banjo); Charlie Daniels (fiddle, electric bass); Corlynn Hanney, Donna Washburn (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Chris Shaw .
