| | 50 Cent Before I Self-Destruct CDs (2007) With DVD
Playlist: The Very Best Of music CDs
$11.19 Released without the usual flurry of hype, Before I Self Destruct fulfills 50 Cent's contractual obligation to the Interscope label. It also doubles as a throwback album, returning the rapper to the hunger and hatred of his early mixtapes while skillfully recasting him as a wannabe upstart. That is, for the most part. The four radio-friendly bedroom numbers that conclude the album are out of place but fairly good to dime-piece beautiful, with the best being the Ne-Yo showcase "Baby by Me" ("Have a baby by me, baby/Be a millionaire"). As pleasing as these final numbers are, if you ...

Mr. Burton also recorded one of Paul's tunes, "Panama," on his "Reunion" album with Pat Metheny. Since the mid 1980s Paul has been very active in the vibrant Brazilian jazz scene in New York City. He was a member of the Terra Brasil, which featured pianist/composer Cidinho Teixeira and vocalist Vera Mara, both veterans of the great Gilberto Gil's band. From 1994 to the present he has co-led Brasil & Company with Ms. Mara, which performs extensively around NY and has performed as far away as Istanbul. He was also hired to perform in New York and Tokyo with the Tango-jazz pianist and composer Pablo Zeigler, who worked with Astor Piazzola for fifteen years. His great skills in both the jazz and Brazilian arenas have made him one of the most in demand players in New York. Since 1993 Paul has been touring and recording with two great jazz vocalists, Jon Hendricks and ...

Playlist: The Very Best Of album
$13.79 The three pages of liner notes squished into eye-straining type that greet the purchaser of Jason Ricci and his band's highly anticipated follow-up to their roaring 2007 debut for the appropriately named Eclecto Groove label, boil down to this: it's a group effort with Ricci as only one component, and the members understand that their genre-mashing approach is not strictly blues, but they don't care. There's a lot more, of course, but one listen to this set that shifts from good-timey shuffles such as the sunshiny "Sweet Lovin'" to the jazz-rock fusion of the following "Holler for Craig Lawler" and the Latin influenced instrumental "Ptryptophan Pterodactyl" is ...

| | Ridge, Chris & Stampede Dare To Dream CD (2009)
Playlist: The Very Best Of music CDs
$8.69 Nashville – New York – Hollywood (CMT Awards) The release of the long anticipated 20 song double album from Chris Ridge and her band Stampede went off without a hitch here in Nashville this week. Chris Ridge is one of the all time great performing artists in country music. She is without question one of the top female vocalists on the country music scene. The Muscatine, Iowa school teacher who has had so many great songs through the years has really doubled down on this 20 song CD on Platinum Plus International Records. You can’t deny the excitement of sitting through one of country music’s all time favorite female artists singing one of country music’s biggest hits. The song, “I’d Rather Be Alone Than Be Lonely With You” has been quoted in magazines, on television stations, radio stations and in the media hundreds of times. That famous line was written by Linda Carol Forrest who is a distinguished and renown BMI songwriter. The award winning song stayed at #1 in the country charts for over a year during the storied career of Linda Carol Forrest who also wrote a truck load of other big country songs, like "Big Girls Don’t Cry."The 20 song project is priced right in today’s economy and as a music critic, I enjoyed the second set of songs even more than the first. There’s the Kendal Franceschi-Quentin Powers hit entitled, ...
