One for All is a band of New York-based veterans who've played with one another in various combinations, as well as making a number of CDs together under this name with little change in personnel, and of whom all but one are founding members. Featuring tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, trombonist Steve Davis, and trumpeter Jim Rotondi in the front line, plus a rhythm section with pianist David Hazeltine, bassist John Webber, and drummer Joe Farnsworth. While each of them (save Webber) works and records often as an individual bandleader, there is an incredible blend of inspired solos, fresh compositions, and arrangements, along with a spirit of cooperation where no egos get in the way of great music. Hazeltine's peppy "Treatise for Reedus" is an uptempo salute to the talented drummer, who died suddenly at the premature age of only 49 a few days prior to this recording session. Alexander's Latin-flavored "Road to Marostica" features tight ensemble work and invigorating solos, while he was also responsible for the updated treatment of George Gershwin's "But Not for Me." This is a rewarding date by a sextet that is always ready to give their all. ~ Ken Dryden

Return Of The Lineup music CDs
$13.75 David Hazeltine, the consummate composer, arranger and improviser, didn't get to be the artist he is without learning from the masters who came before him. For his 8th Sharp Nine release he pays tribute to his two greatest piano influences, Cedar Walton
Jazz pianist David Hazeltine, like many baby-boomer musicians, is influenced by Wes, Buddy, and Monk Montgomery and Cedar Walton. For what he calls his most personally driven recording date, he pays tribute to them by composing a four-part suite inspired by their sounds. Hazeltine and his quintet -- which includes the formidable vibraphonist Joe Locke and longtime collaborator tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander -- give alms with some well-conceived and executed modern mainstream jazz. The suite begins as a neo-bop ...
