The Tragically Hip have been heroes in their native Canada since the 1980s, though they've remained a cult item in the U.S. With more than 20 years in the rearview mirror, the band has retained its spirit, but grown in subtlety. While this is their second album overseen by Metallica producer Bob Rock, WE ARE THE SAME actually sounds rather mellow in contrast to early efforts like UP TO HERE. Needless to say, Gordon Downie's distinctive vocal quaver is still the dominant element, floating atop a rootsy mix of acoustic and electric guitars and a folk-rock feel that allows the band's thoughtful, melodic compositions to unfold in a way that feels natural and graceful.

Tragically Hip We Are The Same Songs We Are The Same Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) classic Love this record. Best one since, In Violet Light. Coffee Girl, MOrning Moon are now two of my fav HIP songs ever! Submitted by grant (grand forks b.c) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Mellowed, but give it listens, it'll grow on you! If the comeback, true-to-form of In Between Evolution meant anything, Gordon Downie hasn't lost his wild antics and rantings, esp what the track "Love Is a First" is known for. Bob Rock, who produced this and World Container, is a Canadian (at heart) who worked extensively with bands/musicians who don't want to stray too far as far as music roots goes and that's what you'll get with the country meets folk meets rock attitude setting sail with We are the Same is all about you'll ever want to hear courtesy of the genuine Bob Rock has done for 30 years of producing! Not the Hip I used to know This CD starts and ends extremely boring. There may be a few songs that I could listen to all the way through but over all this is garbage to me. I don't know where the energy went from songs like Fully Completely, Courage, 50 Mission cap. Given that was years ago and now they're older now, I still expected more from the Hip. Since Violet Light was released, they have been on a decline compared to what I used to love from them. I'm a big hip fan but I'd have to admit that the only good CD's were from 2000 and before. Sorry guys, this one just doesn't cut it. Submitted by Don (Buffalo, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
Another classic HIP album! After the amazing WORLD CONTAINER album The HIP , decided to change things just a bit. WE ARE THE SAME , is their 12th album from this guitar / drum based only rock band.
They haven't changed their sound , they just have added some other instruments to enhance their sound. A nice change of pace.
WE ARE THE SAME , grows on you the more you listen to it. It has some of the best songs that they have ever written.
The first 6 songs range from great NEIL YOUNG like country rock , to even some really good , BECK. The last set of songs are the rocking HIP that we know and love. I believe that the people who don't like this album haven't listened to it enough. WE ARE THE SAME , is one of their best CDs ever. Just give it a chance and don't judge it by your first or second listen. You will be very happy that you did not. Submitted by regan_flint (toronto , canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Chris Stamey Travels In The South CD (2004)
We Are The Same songs
$13.75 A founding leader of the influential cult band the dB's, Chris Stamey has spent most of last 15 years producing other people's discs (Alejandro Escovedo, Yo La Tengo, Whiskeytown) rather than creating his own. Not counting a 1995 instrumental album, Travels in the South marks his first record since 1991, when he released both the solo Fireworks and Mavericks, a duet disc with his old dB's partner Peter Holsapple. South, however, shows little sign of rustiness. The album kicks off with the glorious "14 Shades of Green," a chimey gem that takes a nostalgic look at a hometown. This leadoff track also establishes the theme of traveling that runs through the disc. Songs like "Insomnia," "Ride," and the title track all touch upon the feeling of life in transit. The sublime "In Spanish Harlem" takes a Paul Simon-esque look at New York City but with a decidedly eased-back Southern tempo. The entire album, in fact, rides along at a leisurely pace, with the majority of songs surpassing the four-minute mark. But ...
| | Tragically Hip In Between Evolution CD (2004)
We Are The Same album
$15.35 The first few seconds of In Between Evolution offer a summation in miniature of both why the Tragically Hip are so great and why mainstream success has eluded them, at least in the United States. A distorted guitar chimes out a road-ready riff, soon joined by a taut rhythm section. Then lead singer Gordon Downie shouts out "Here's a glue guy, a performance God," in a pinched howl that sounds like it's ready to veer off-key at any second. That combination of arena rock and indie sensibility is exactly what fans have come to expect from the band; the approach isn't all that different from Pearl Jam's more recent work, except that Downie's lyrics have always been, well, weirder and more literate than the hits that took Pearl Jam to the top of the charts. None of that explains why the Hip still sell out stadiums ...
