| | Oasis Heathen Chemistry CD Oasis Discography of CDs
Oasis has always been a band that favored the "big" gestures of rock stardom. Their fifth studio album, HEATHEN CHEMISTRY, doesn't change this stance, but what it does do is hone the band's best qualities to an impossible-to-resist machine-like precision, all gleaming chrome and super-high gloss finish. The basics are all here: the snarling, swaggering vocals; the massive, all-encompassing hooks, the bright melodies; and, perhaps most importantly, the overwhelming sense that they just might be the most unstoppable force known to rock.
Most of the songs fall into one of two modes, either rather sweet, sensitive (though never cloying) ballads or monumental stadium rockers that bow before no man. Standouts of the first are the torch (or perhaps cigarette lighter) song grandeur of "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" and the structurally bizarre "Little by Little," a track which demonstrates an unnerving but wholly effective synthesis of mid-period Pink Floyd. Standouts of the second kind include all of the album's first three tracks but especially the steamroller that is "Hung in a Bad Place," a monstrous, spitting squall of true rock majesty.
Oasis: Noel Gallagher, Liam Gallagher, Gem Archer, Andy Bell.
Additional personnel: Johnny Marr (guitar, slide guitar, background vocals); Paul Stacey (piano, Hammond organ, Mellotron); Mike Rowe (piano, pump organ, Hammond organ); London Session Orchestra.
Rolling Stone (7/11/02, p.108) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...For all of the variety [Noel Gallagher] is capable of, he's still not above using the old tried-and-true devices...to get his point across....Liam's torn-apart vocals...provide the blood and guts necessary to make the songs [heartfelt]." Entertainment Weekly (7/12/02, p.84) - "...A step up from their last 2 albums...suggesting they can crib from U2 and T.Rex while maintaining what's theirs..." Rating: B- CMJ (8/12/02, p.6) - "...The sound of the new Oasis..." Vibe (8/02, p.156) - 3 out of 5 - "...The new CD crackles with anger, energy, and defiance....They can still bring it on..." Mojo (Publisher) (7/02, p.94) - "...'Crying Your Heart Out' and 'She Is Love' are probably the most efficient, infectious pop Noel's ever written..." NME (Magazine) (6/29/02, p.36) - 8 out of 10 - "...Play it loud and you can still believe this is the band who hosted the biggest rock'n'roll block party since punk..." | | Han Bennink Laughing Owl CD (2001)
Heathen Chemistry music CDs
$12.95 This could also be called "The Laughing Musicians." Placing free jazz drum king Han Bennink into an Amsterdam studio with anarchist experimental punk guitarist Terrie Ex is a risky move. While Amsterdam's the Ex have been quite experimental in their approach to punk rock -- even recording with the late Tom Cora -- a go-for-it duet improv session with a drummer on Bennink's level could have proved to be disastrous. Instead, it ...
| | Masque 811 - VHS CD (2002)
Heathen Chemistry songs
$22.79 Masque2003 Stellar Award NomineeInstrumental CD of the YearRecorded Music Packing of the Year Independent August 13th, 2003811/Infinite LoveMeek RecordsThe immense popularity driving "smooth jazz" radio across the country is leaking more noise in the gospel vein. Masque, whose first CD, Thank You, garnered attention from Billboard and the Stellar Awards three years ago, mixes jazz with other urban (Latin, house, funk) ingredients. Keeping those grooves intact, this instrumental unit releases 811/Infinite Love, a concert recording including a bonus 5-song studio EP. The Chicago-based band is credited with co-arrangements and production but the bulk of songwriting belongs to keyboardist/pianist Clifford Johnson and drummer/percussionist Kamaron Jarmon. Other members are Pierre Walker on keys, John Goldman (reeds), bass guitarist Timothy Fullerton and Wilbert Jarmon on guitars with several supporting players and vocalists. Despite just two CDs since its formation in 1985, Masque has backed countless talent, such as Daryl Coley, Tramaine Hawkins, jazz unit Yellow jackets and R&B vocalist Dave Hollister. Last year, Masque expanded their ministry, performing for critical causes such as the Melanie Veliz Cancer Fundraiser in Aurora, Illinois. The concert portion is ushered in with Take Over, centering the lead bass guitar of Fullerton, displaying a Stanley Clarke delivery (fast runs, chording). The horns mold with the rhythm section in this funk excursion. An exquisite transition flows into the next selection, Change Me, featuring saxophonist John Goldman. Some encouraging words via Clifford Johnson precede Right Here. When experiences in our personal lives seem to indicate the Lord is "far away or He's maybe on a break, the God of Israel, He never slumbers nor sleeps" (Psalm 121:3-4)." After Clifford's keyboard solo, John Goldman provides another joyous saxophone journey. We've heard of "the 411" and calling 911. Now the call's out towards a love unconditional, 811: "I would not dare put my face in a frown cause you're around." Lead vocalist Eva Fullerton lays down some irresistible scat adlibs. My Gift To You displays all the instrumental gifts of the band. ...
