Perhaps in the U.K. there are fewer divisions between musical genres. That might explain why saxophonist (also flutist) Larry Stabbins can soar in contexts as distinctive as the cool jazz-pop of Working Week and the edgy, often free jazz of Keith Tippett. Stonephace is the collaboration between Stabbins and the DJ Krzysztof Oktalski, also known as Oktal, where they combine aspects of fiery jazz and cerebral electronica. Further, both Oktalski and Stabbins have an honest feel for classic funk and soul. It's this mixture of diverse elements that gives STONEPHACE its unique sound of inspired spontaneity in the context of engaging grooves.
2009 release, veteran Jazz dissident Larry Stabbins's collaboration with enigmatic sonic alchemist Krzysztof Oktalski, a mind-bending mix of Hip Hop and externalist semantics. Featuring Portishead's Adrian Utley on guitar and Jim Barr on bass, plus a guest appearance from virtuoso trumpeter Guy Barker as you've never heard him before, Stonephace creates a unique universe where electronics, Free Jazz and Afro-tinged beats collide. Imagine a mix of Sun Ra, Fela Kuti, Pharaoh Sanders and early Soft Machine produced by Jay Dee and you might be getting close. Tru Thoughts.
Personnel: Adrian Utley (electric guitar); Larry Stabbins (flute, saxophone); Guy Barker (trumpet); Richard Edwards (trombone); Mark Sanders (drums).
Unknown Contributor Role: Jim Barr.

Stonephace album
$11.65 EVERCLEAR, AMC's finest hour and one the '90s' most powerful albums, is simultaneously lush and searing, heartache and despair borne out in elegant arrangements that combine fragile prettiness and soul-baring howls of pain. Multi-instrumentalist Bruce Kaphan rose to the occasion of his production debut. The canyons of reverb on the instruments are strangely appropriate, highlighting the almost decadent, tragically beautiful feel of the songs. Keyboards, pedal steel, and acoustic guitars drift like abandoned ships swirling around in a colorfully tempestuous sea full of unknown nautical demons. Guitarist Vudi contributes some of the most artful, non-traditional sounds ever concocted by a "rock" axeman.
The album begins with a slow, soulful lament to a love who's either sleeping or dead, before taking up the subject of mortality more fully in the anthemic "Rise," written by Eitzel for an AIDS-stricken friend. Eitzel observes the trials of those around him on "Ex-Girlfriend," but "Sick of Food" turns his gaze inward, breathlessly describing his alienation from virtually everything and his simultaneous ...

| | Trembling Blue Stars Last Holy Writer CD (2007) (Import) United Kingdom
Stonephace album
$15.25 Truth be told, the Trembling Blue Stars routine was getting kind of stale by the release of Seven Autumn Flowers in 2004. With that album they crossed the line that divides reliable and predictable; no longer did the morose lyrics, melancholy vocals, minor chords and cheesy synths make a positive impression. Luckily for fans of the band, The Last Holy Writer is a comeback of sorts, certainly an improvement, and maybe even one of their finest records. How did they do it? It's hard to say because on the surface it seems like not much has changed sound or mood-wise. There's still a preponderance of downbeat lyrics and Bob Wratten hasn't suddenly traded in his mope for a smile, no fear of that anytime soon. The building blocks of their sound are mostly the same too. What makes a difference here is a boost in the overall energy level from unrelenting gloom to mostly sad, a slightly expanded sonic palette that makes room for field recordings and a wider range of drum sounds, and most importantly, some really good songs. Chief among them are the Beth Arzy-sung "Idyllwild" which, much like Helen Reddy on the last album, fairly bursts out of the speakers like sun through the clouds, "Darker, Colder, Slower," which has the kind dramatic shifts in dynamics and tone TBS Records need more of, the laid-back near-country rocker "The Tenth of Always," and the ...

| | Chad Mccullough Dark Wood, Dark Water CD (2009)
Stonephace songs
$14.69 Like many artists who lead dates on Origin, Chad McCullough makes his recording debut for the label, joined by veterans like saxophonists Mark Taylor and Geof Bradfield, pianist Bill Anschell (whose career has flourished since relocating to the Pacific Northwest), bassist Jeff Johnson, and drummer John Bishop. McCullough's rich re-harmonized treatment of the Beatles' "Blackbird" barely touches on the melody before it progresses well beyond its familiar melody, showcasing a pair of flighty soprano sax solos (presumably one by each reed player, though it isn't mentioned in the liner notes) and the leader's spirited flügelhorn. Anschell contributed the gorgeous "Dreamscape," an impressionist piece reminiscent of some of the compositions of trumpeter Tom Harrell. The balance of the songs were penned by the leader, including the powerful "Three Pillars," which is built upon just three phrases of music, along with the eerie "Bock's ...

Stonephace album
$16.39 Craving Lucy’s current sound and edgy melodies easily attract rock fans as diverse as the genre’s audiences. The band’s original material straddles the nearly impossible: fresh and familiar.Comprised of passionate vocal performances by Steve Archambault and the talents of guitarist and co-founding member Mark Fitzpatrick, along with bassist Nate Comp and drummer Justin Pace, the music of Craving Lucy’s universal themes have broad appeal.Archambault and Fitzpatrick came together in another musical venture and began writing together, developing a cohesive chemistry to compose what would eventually become the sound of Craving Lucy.Soon, the duo assembled their own band, labeled it Bionic and released a successful four-song EP with Collective Soul producer, Anthony J. Resta. The EP soon found its way onto the airwaves of mainstream Providence, RI commercial rock station WHJY. The act solidified in 2009 after recruiting drummer Pace and bassist Comp. With the new members’ musical influences and sensibilities, ...
| | Cedar Walton Voices Deep Within CD (2009)
Stonephace CD music
$14.05 Cedar Walton continues to produce consistently good mainstream jazz recordings, approaching a sum total of 50. This effort revisits previous original compositions or tackles some hard bop and standards, while alternating between trio and quartet formats. Tenor saxophonist Vincent Herring's dry, flatted style is heard on half of the material, illuminating his increased desire to find a distinctive voice away from his more recognizable alto sax. Veteran bassist Buster Williams is clearly someone Walton enjoys working with regularly, while drummer Willie Jones III is more than capable of driving the pianist's swinging machine on a straight-ahead path. There's nothing complicated or groundbreaking about this music, but it is solid, substantive, and always enjoyable whether on the first or the hundredth hearing. Three classic themes of Walton's reappear in slightly rearranged form; the spirited "Voices Deep Within," which is one of Walton's more affirmed and memorable melodies, the easy, lyrical post-bop piece "Something in Common," with a hefty bass solo from Williams, and one for his deceased mother, "Dear Ruth," lightly rendered, modified in pacing ...
