Africa, Center Of The World album
$13.79 Joe Magnarelli is a veteran of bands of led by Toshiko Akiyoshi, Ray Barretto, Lionel Hampton, Harry Connick, Jr., and others. While he recorded several earlier CDs for Criss Cross, this is his first release for a U.S. label. The talented trumpeter is joined by fellow New York based players, including baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan, plus a rhythm section that has worked together regularly, consisting of pianist David Hazeltine, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Kenny Washington. Magnarelli penned several of the songs for the sessions, including the easygoing bossa nova "The Village" and the warm tribute "Ballad for Barretto," honoring the Latin percussionist who died a short time after being recognized as an NEA Jazz Master in early 2006. His "Soul Sister" is a transparent reworking of "Body ...

$22.25 It's hard to believe that after recording as a leader for 40 years, DRESDEN: IN CONCERT is Jan Garbarek's first-ever live album. For those who think that Garbarek abandoned jazz some time ago, this will be a shock. DRESDEN is an engaged, kinetic, double-disc, two-hour performance of his ...

$11.49 Digitally remastered by John McCartney (Airwave Studios, Chicago, Illinois).
For those who don't know better, the free jazz movement is considered a sharp break with the past heritage of the music. That really wasn't the case. As Albert Ayler and Archie Shepp hearkened back to field hollers and very basic folk forms, musicians like Clifford Thornton went in the opposite direction, building on the music of the sophisticates and expanding the possibilities for jazz. Listening to music with this much space in it, it might be hard for some listeners to hear the Mingus. But it's there. And because that's there, ...

| | Mark Maxwell Angel Biscuit CD (2009)
Africa, Center Of The World album
$16.39 For the past 15 years or so, I’ve been recording my music and selling CDs at street fairs and art shows across the country, mainly out here on the Left Coast. I’ve done pretty well, too - I’ve sold over a half a million CDs. My fans sure love me.I’ve been playing the saxophone since I was 9 years old. I started playing in the fifth grade band, played all through school, played lead alto in the way-cool high school jazz band, The ‘Wildsiders’. I even spent several years playing in the Army band over in Germany.I’ve always played lots of different instruments - guitar, drums, piano, flute - but sax has always been my main thing. I like to say that I’ve got sax in my blood ’cause check this out - my Mom played the sax when she was a kid, my older sister played sax in school, and my younger brother, Phil, is a professional saxophonist (and screamin’ player) to this day. When I first started composing and recording my music back in the early 90s I discovered, to my delight, that I have a natural talent for it. I’ve been thoroughly addicted to it ever since. Composing and recording music is the one activity that, for me, is all-consuming and timeless.People ask me all the time who I’ve played with, and I say probably nobody you would know. What I have done, though, is I’ve played with a lot of people that play with people that you know, people like Garth Webber (Miles Davis, Robben Ford, Boz Scaggs, Bonnie Raitt), Tony Lufrano (Elvin Bishop, Taj Mahal, Todd Rundgren), Steve Weingart (Chaka Khan, Eric Marienthal, Ernie Watts, Warren Hill, John Pattituci, Dave Weckl), Red Young (Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Sonny & Cher, Dolly Parton, Eric Burdon), Mike Valerio ...
