Since the 1980s drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts has been building his reputation as one of the best musicians in contemporary jazz, first as the drummer for Wynton Marsalis's band, then as a in-demand session player and a leader in his own right. WATTS, released in 2009, is Watts's fifth studio album as a leader, is one of his finest achievements. Watts proves himself an accomplished writer on 10 original compositions, mining the post-bop tradition without shying away from adventurous moves that bend the structure. But it's the line-up of talent that really dazzles here, with an all-star personnel that includes bassist Christian McBride, trumpeter Terrence Blanchard, and saxophonist Branford Marsalis. There's plenty of scintillating group chemistry and individual stretching out throughout WATTS, all driven by the leader's fiercely swinging grooves.

Watts album
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop standards, but Brown, O'Brien, and Schols uplift and infuse them with fresh ideas. Among the more memorable selections are "Trane's Slo Blues," "Lester Leaps In" and "Lover Come Back to Me." Quite possibly this is the definitive Ted Brown set to acquire; certainly it is highly recommended to lovers of straight-ahead jazz. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Cedar Walton Seasoned Wood CD (2008)
Watts music CDs
$13.65 Post-bop mainstay Cedar Walton has tickled the ivories with everyone from Art Blakey to Clifford Jordan, but his solo discography is not to be overlooked. SEASONED WOOD, cut when Walton was nearing his mid-70s, is as vital and refined as anything he's done in his career. Backed by an exceptional quintet, including drummer Al Foster and longtime cohort saxophonist Vincent Herring, Walton swings fiercely on standards ("The Man I Love," "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square") and on his own excellent originals. Sophisticated and elegant, Walton updates his classic post-bop sound, ...
| | Dave Holland Pass It On CD (2008)
Watts songs
$9.69 Using a sextet, upright bassist Holland sets the bar even higher than on his previous efforts, adding the always tasteful pianist Mulgrew Miller and a four-horn front line that is relentless. The jaunty opening number, "The Sum of All Parts," is a 5/4 African percussion-based piece led by Robin Eubanks with folded-in alto and trumpet and witty counterpoint. Adding a light samba feel during the upbeat "Fast Track" with the horns in perfect unison, the ensemble shifts up to hard bop. A 10/8 choppy and bouncy "Modern Times" also uses Brazilian inferences and sees Antonio Hart switching to soprano. On the soulful side, the title track recalls visions of Horace Silver - a groovy, fun boogaloo that has "radio hit" written all over it, while "Lazy Snake" takes the soul element deep underground and contrasts it with a suggestion of stark surrealism. Then there's the near 14-minute, free-based, diffuse "Rivers Run" (dedicated to Sam Rivers), which features the accented by the bowed bass of Holland, building in intensity as the horns step up the sonic density in darker hues. Of course, this band can easily drive music hard, as on the post-bopper "Equality," which turns sullen and funky, then swings angularly.

| | Stereolizza X-Amine Your Zippa CD (2009)
Watts CD music
$16.45 Founders of the Stereolizza band – vocalist and writer of lyrics Katya Shalayeva and Alex Ginchev (music and programming).Katya is an attractive blonde girl with background in a nice family. Until her music career swept in, she used to lead a life of a “good girl” and graduated from a prestigious university with a major in International Relations. No one could seriously think that Katya would soon break all stereotypes about Diplomatic School graduates and would become a hip-hop performer. She feels better writing and performing music that she likes then leading a “normal life.” At that time she was singing in a High School group and Alex was playing in another band, called "Scoobie Doo". One day the two musicians performed at the same festival. Katya met Alex at the after-party, and when it turned out they had so much in common, they understood they must work together and created a new band, called "Stereoliza" later.“X.Y.Z.”, “Corporate Logic” and “When You Are Here” are the three singles of Stereolizza that quickly gained popularity in many European countries. The “X.Y.Z.” song was 8 in yearly chart of Top40-charts, which is one of the most popular web-charts, based on the results of national charts of 25 European countries. The “Corporate Logic” was put on the Universal Music Group weekly show-reel in October 2006.The band's three music videos that were in top 10 “International Hits” chart of American music TV-channel “International Music Feed”. In 2006 the Black Eyed Peas management selected Stereolizza as opening act at the BEP concert in Kiev.In 2007 “X.Y.Z.” and “Corporate Logic” songs attracted the attention of American TV and film producers. “X.Y.Z.” became a soundtrack of “Moonlight Show. | | Cripple Creek Fairies Metal Arms CD (2009)
Watts music CDs
$10.15 Cripple Creek FairiesMetal Arms By Sam SutherlandExclaimThese Calgarians play like Alice Cooper in their hearts but on record, things come out with too much of an earnest early punk rock edge to play into heavy metal territory or stereotypes. This rules, because the band's unexpected mix of Who riffs and Stooges songwriting makes for an original blast of classic rock'n'roll, punk and metal that doesn't sound anything like other "punk metal" bands. Instead, you get the early Sabbath-infused "Runaround" butting up against the Cheap Trick melody of "Head Down" and the almost Stooges-y "Mars & the Moon." That the vocals avoid any obvious references to these bands' very, very famous singers makes the Cripple Creek Fairies a pretty unusual specimen, one that deserve some plays by any fan of the aforementioned bands. (Transistor 66) Cripple Creek FairiesMetal ArmsTransistor 66 / Catch and ReleaseJim VaughanThe comic book heroes of rock and roll, the Cripple Creek Fairies, are back to rock your panties off and save the universe with their fifth CD, Metal Arms. This album is just the first of a “Five Fingers of Death Ear Punch”: five albums to be released this year that will blow your mind. Metal Arms is pure rock and roll that is so tight and “turned up to 11,” it will make you rethink the fluff in your iPod. All nine tracks are well written from start to finish, and are like an intergalactic version of the Who (in space suits) doing Motorhead covers. Monster Zero’s Git-box solo in “I’ve Got the Fire” is like a chainsaw cutting a planet in half, while Les Izmoore’s lyrics in “Mars and the Moon,” “…they buried him face down, in his favorite sweater,” are instant classics. Songs like “Wild Women,” “Head Down,” and “What Doesn’t Kill Me” give a glimpse of the satirical flavor that only the CCFs can pull off. Winning the title of “the best band in Calgary” from the masterminds of the Sled Island Festival this past summer, the Fairies make all the “wild women” crazy (or so I’ve heard, anyway). Even ...

Despite the lack of free time, they completed the goal just before Christmas. The excitement of receiving 500 copies of the new album on cassette in January 1995 was something to remember! Yes, cassettes! After way too many years Gorrell finally re-mastered the music for CD and Digital Distribution. Brian and Eric are forever grateful for the ...
| | Zombie Nation Zombielicious CD (2009)
Watts album
$14.15 There's no question that no matter the style, it never hurts for an act to start off strong, a lesson that Zombie Nation doesn't forget for this album. Beginning with "Mas de Todo," an aggressive bit of sleazy funk-techno that is both retrogressive in its rework-the-'70s basis and completely forward driven in its crisp digital impact -- the flute breaks are nice touches -- Zombielicious shows again that Zombie Nation may only be a collective tribute to plenty of acts and movements in the past, but it's a very good one. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the energy level ramps down a bit after "Mas de Todo" but Zombie Nation know how to make consistent catnip for rave-damaged listeners of a certain age, never quite distinct enough to be unique but never unlistenable, either. Both parts of "Worth It" are compressed early electro squelch for a newer generation, at once skronk and stuttering breakdown. If crackling builds like that on "The Fact" are standard issue, the live drum breaks add something more, while the nervous strings and ...
