Jimmy Greene has stood out from the vast majority of emerging tenor saxophonists of his generation because he has sought to develop his own sound along with composing compelling music. This session with pianist Xavier Davis, guitarist Lage Lund, bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Eric Harland (like the leader, rising players of his generation who are much in-demand), features nine of his potent compositions. His big tone dominates "Mission Statement," the stimulating post-bop opener. The lush "In Nelba's Love" is a warm, spacious ballad built off a repeated riff. The wild "Mr. Octopus" likely got its title from reaching in several musical directions at once, though the musicians devour Greene's demanding work whole, especially during Davis' expressive solo, while the saxophonist wraps it with a surprising twist. Vibraphonist Stefon Harris is added for the exuberant "Revelation," showcasing Greene's expressive chops on soprano sax, while Greene also plays soprano on a turbocharged setting of sacred music composer Harry Smith's "Give Thanks."
Personnel: Jimmy Greene (saxophone); Lage Lund (guitar); Xavier Davis (piano, Fender Rhodes piano); Reuben Rogers (bass instrument); Eric Harland (drum).
Down Beat (p.52) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "He strings together long, pirouetting runs, accented by plangent squeals straight out of Trane's book." JazzTimes (p.60) - "Greene fills the spaces between shouting declarations with secondary narratives containing sudden stops and inspired renewals and elaborate fine details of inner commentary." | | Kodaq Developin' CD (2009)
Mission Statement songs
$10.15 KodaQ isn’t your normal hip hop artist. Although many of the hip hop characteristics are in his music, he attempts to make everyone a fan. Not only does he rhyme about what he goes through, he tries to incorporate a variety of topics in a way that everyone can relate with. Hate your 9 – 5? So does he. Need to have a drink to take the edge off and escape your life for a bit? Who doesn’t? Daydream about what your life would be like if you had more money? You’re not alone. KodaQ’s motto is “Just give it a chance” and he believes if you do, there will be at least one song for everyone. Growing up in Hampton, Virginia, KodaQ always loved music. Raised around a variety of types, he grew to enjoy them all. One Christmas, KodaQ was given his first boom box along with some cassette tapes, The Footloose soundtrack & a rap compilation tape (don’t ask how his parents came up with two choices from opposite ends of the spectrum). The first rap song KodaQ remembers is “My Adidas” by Run DMC (this might explain his love of sneakers as well). KodaQ continued to consume all the music he could, without ever really choosing one particular favorite over ...

| | Bryan Dunn Vicious Waltz CD (2009)
Mission Statement songs
$12.69 The danceable groove of "Television Song" introduces Bryan Dunn’s latest release, Vicious Waltz. The 10-song album constitutes Dunn's best recording to date, with regard to his songwriting, production, and musical maturity. While his lyrics have drawn listeners into his songs since the early '90s, fans could previously count on his themes to frequent autobiographical loves and loves lost (more the latter than former). Vicious Waltz does not sidestep the topic entirely but surrounds it impressively with topics ranging from "Ordinary"’s comment on Top 40 artists' egos to "The Ghost of Abe Lincoln"’s anti-war strains. With Vicious Waltz, Dunn consciously makes an impressive (and successful) effort to include a large cast of performers he’s worked with since relocating from Austin, Texas to New York City in 2001. Among them, Lara Ewen’s half of “Ten Dollar Ring”'s vocal duet and Jeremy Goldsmith’s lead guitar on “Silver Line” and "The Ghost Of Abe Lincoln" add a delightful variety to the album's instrumental brilliance. Dunn has contemplated bringing piano into his own songs for years, and Misty Boyce does a phenomenal job of incorporating just the right parts into each song she plays.Boyce's tasteful lilts throughout "Ten Dollar Ring" create a late-night saloon vibe, giving the song a bottom-of-the-glass bluesy confessional feel that help expose the characters' rawest emotions. Then, taking several stylistic sharp turns, her piano amps-up the old-timey swing of "The Ghost Of Abe Lincoln" and then adds a beautiful depth to the travelogue/dedicatorial, "You, South Dakota." Still, similar to the rest of Bryan Dunn's repertoire, Vicious Waltz's greatest strength lies in his keen ability to write poppy, melodically pleasing narratives that hold listeners' attention throughout an entire album.Dunn crafts carefully worded, ...
