| | Black Dice Repo CD Black Dice Discography of CDs
Brooklyn experimental rock outfit Black Dice are sonic pioneers with an anarchistic agenda. On REPO, the band continue to push the envelope of noise-rock, melding electronic samples from every source imaginable, including television and the Internet, in disparate collages that are as mesmerizing as they are confrontational. And while the effects may seem off-putting to the uninitiated, REPO is actually one of Black Dice's most cohesive and appealing efforts. The compositions are nearly ritualistic in nature, pulling the listener into their webby pulse even as they dazzle and disorient. In addition, the album plays like social commentary on the order of Throbbing Gristle or Negativeland. This is music from the heart of the machine age.
Black Dice: Aaron Warren, Bjorn Copeland, Eric Copeland.
Recording information: Gizpad (2008); Rare Book Room (2008).
Spin (p.76) - "The trio whip through all manner of rubber-band noise on 'La Cucaracha,' screw down otherwise danceable breaks for 'Ultra Vomit Craze,' and mix alien choirs with punk shouts." Pitchfork (Website) - "With its steady forward movement and messy pointillist pillars thrown up where concise beats might be, the opening 'Nite Creme' marks Black Dice's slow, lurching move towards something like techno." Repo album
$13.45 Boards of Canada established themselves as one of the most progressive and hypnotic electronica acts around with their first two releases (their debut, MUSIC HAS THE RIGHT TO CHILDREN, is required listening for fans of the genre). The group's long-awaited third release continues the surging, elemental ambience of the Scottish ...
| | Liars CD (2007)
Repo CD music
$12.49 Since their 2001 debut, THEY THREW US ALL IN A TRENCH AND STUCK A MONUMENT ON TOP, experimental rock outfit Liars have moved from trendy post-punk to drone-based tribal freak-outs, hitting all points in between. "Plaster Casts of Everything," the first single from the band's fourth album, finds Liars harnessing their primal psychedelia to a propulsive punk-edged drive. The song, which has a chaotic, thumping drum pattern anchor the groove while a guitar churns relentlessly on a one-chord vamp, suggests that the band was getting back to rock basics with their 2007 self-titled full-length.
Elsewhere, as on the Jesus and Mary Chain-inspired "Freak Out," or the new wave-tinged, keys-driven "Protection" (arguably one of the band's most ...
| | Burial Untrue CD (2007)
Repo music CDs
$13.75 If most musical projects aim for at least a measure of popular notoriety, the clandestine U.K. producer known as Burial seems to thrive on self-imposed anonymity. In interviews, the London-based dubstep artist explains his willful obscurity as an effort to draw a formal boundary between underground and pop--to effectively become "untrackable, unreadable, just a distant light." Whether this is pure hype-sheet driven strategy or a bona fide lob at the music business's cult of personality makes little difference; the immersive, emotive music found on his second album, UNTRUE, evinces a true perfectionist's touch. Drawing upon the euphoric "feminine pressure" vocals of 2-step garage and the malevolent bass rumble of darkside drum & bass, UNTRUE both elaborates upon and conflates genre clichés with a mix of irreverent deconstruction and reverential homage.
As in his eponymous debut, UNTRUE is daubed in a grainy, lo-fi ambience that casts a sinister fog over the rhythmic foreground. Ominous creaks, pops, and drizzles lurch furtively from some void, creating crackly accents or yawning, metallic squeaks. On "Ghost Hardware" the staccato syncopations of garage are either distended into growling bass undertow, or crumpled into shards of asymmetrical flourish. Against the metronomic clack of a woodblock-like rimshot, ...

Repo songs
$12.69 San Francisco's favorite noise-pop sons (and daughter, vocalist Satomi Matsuzaki) are nothing if not prolific, with OFFEND MAGGIE representing their 10th full-length in 11 years. But this time around they sound a bit more menacing, thanks to the addition of guitarist Ed Rodriguez. "Buck And Judy" is the hallmark of this heaviness: it retains ...
| | Sunn O Monoliths & Dimensions CD (2009)
Repo album
$10.89 Practitioners of the glacial school of extreme-volume music, Sunn O))) are the leading exponents of doom, the darkest and heaviest of all metal sub genres. While the group's black-cloaked garb and ritual theatrics have firmly aligned them to the imagery and aesthetic of metal, leader Stephen O'Malley's numerous forays into noise and experimental music, and member Greg Anderson's sideline as label head of Southern Lord (the leading label for adventurous metal) has fashioned the duo as gatekeepers to metal's uncharted paths. MONOLITHS AND DIMENSIONS, the seventh Sun O))) album, continues the monolithic low-end throb and stentorian guitar drones the duo are best known for, and features an array of past collaborators (Attila Csihar, Oren Ambarchi) and brand new guests, Julian Priester (trombonist for Herbie Hancock and Sun Ra), Dylan Carlson (Earth), and avant-garde composer and violinist Eyvind Kang.
Sunn 0: Stephen O'Malley (electric guitar); Greg Anderson.
Personnel: Attila Csihar (vocals, keyboards); Jessika Kenney (alto); Oren Ambarchi (electric guitar, ...
| | Tortoise Beacons Of Ancestorship CD (2009)
Repo CD music
$13.05 Returning after a five-year gap (which, granted, included a box set and a collaborative record with Bonnie "Prince" Billy), Tortoise confronted a pair of age-old musical questions: does anyone really care about an experimental rock group after 15 years, and does said group actually have anything to say after that length of time? BEACONS OF ANCESTORSHIP neatly squashes all those questions and assumptions, revealing a band that is just as fascinated with ...
