Greg Neufeld, an up-and-coming musician out of Abbotsford, British Columbia, is in the business of bringing good music to the people, and has been for quite some time now. The lead singer of successful lower-mainland band Dimarco opened shows for bands such as Stabilo, Default, Hedley and Matthew Good, as well as many notable shows of their own. Greg, a two-time Canadian Idol competitor (best known for his untimely exit in season five, landing him a seventh place finish), is no stranger to the music business. He recently went to Nashville to work with accredited song writer Amy Foster (Michael Buble, Josh Groban) and Michael Dukes (Eva Avila), an experience that he feels fortunate to have been a part of. He is proud of the finished product of his debut CD. With songs such as "Secret", "Your Eyes" and "Sleep You off", Greg feels that the CD has the potential to show the public who he is as an artist. "This album is something that I have wanted to do for a while now," he says. "I truly think it's captured me in the way that I want to be captured; this is a Greg Neufeld album." Highlighted by the perennial "Christmas in Dixie," Alabama Christmas is a collection of holiday tunes counting among one of Alabama's strongest records, seasonal or otherwise; although at times the material is overly sappy. With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen pop. All this makes For Your Entertainment very, very modern in a way few mainstream pop albums are in 2009, whether they're products of the American Idol/19 machine or not: Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Rivers Cuomo, P!nk, Lady GaGa, Linda Perry, Ryan Tedder, Muse's Matthew Bellamy, and Justin Hawkins of the Darkness all elbow each other for space here, creating cheerful genre-bending where Sweet gives way to the Scissor Sisters, and it's never, ever necessary for a listener to recognize the allusions, either the intentional or accidental. All the heavy-hitters here write to Adam's image -- GaGa wisely goes so far as to keep the object of his affection male -- and they give him some truly terrific pop tunes: Hawkins' glorious, goofy opener "Music Again," a strange dead ringer for Aldo Nova; Dr. Luke's cool strutt

For its third studio outing, INTIMACY, the British rock group Bloc Party makes a notable departure from the post-punk/shoegazer-influenced SILENT ALARM and the arena-ready WEEKEND IN THE CITY, opting for a boldly wide-ranging set of songs that often boasts a shiny techno veneer. In fact, INTIMACY's first two tracks, "Ares" and "Mercury," recall the more aggressive side of the Chemical Brothers, which isn't entirely surprising, since Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke collaborated with the electronica duo in the past. While some fans, particularly aficionados of ALARM, may be disheartened by such a sonic shift, the scorching "Halo" keeps the torch of earlier albums burning, and "Signs" picks up on the ensemble's occasional ambient leanings, showing that Bloc Party can maintain some bearings even as it sets out towards unfamiliar waters.

Although it's credited as a Tommy Tutone record, Nervous Love is actually the work of Tommy Heath after the band's demise.
