A mere 13 years after their last full-length collaboration, 1996's DANCE HALL AT LOUSE POINT, PJ Harvey and John Parish reunite for the impressively varied A WOMAN, A MAN, WALKED BY. Longtime friends and creative partners--the young Polly Harvey's very first band in the late 1980s was fronted by Parish--the duo have a long personal history together. But what's most impressive about this album is how much both artists have grown in the dozen-plus years since they last worked together at length. Seemingly free from her need to make each album a stand-alone exploration of one particular mood or musical style, Harvey embraces an atypical musical eclectisim here that ranges from noir film score jazz to folk-rock, while Parish's tunes and arrangements are richer than ever before.
Lyricist: PJ Harvey.
Personnel: PJ Harvey (vocals); John Parish (various instruments).
Audio Mixer: Flood.
Audio Remasterer: John Dent.Spin (p.79) - "Harvey morphs from rasping seductress to screaming chimera with stunning velocity..." Q (Magazine) (p.101) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The closing 'Cracks In The Canvas' is the best of both parties: with just cracked ukulele and organ fuzz, Parish conjures up a limpid elegy for the singer's bereavement." Mojo (Publisher) (p.100) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] joyful understanding, a quiet intuition, a compendium of the participants' pasts and presents. After nearly two decades, this man and woman still turn heads." Blender (Magazine) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Parish, a guitarist and keyboardist, has the extra chops to devise music that lurches and stomps unpredictably or floats into the ether." Pitchfork (Website) - "Harvey has said that her collaborations with Parish give her the freedom to push into new places, and there is a sense of exploration here as she fits her words to the shapes of his songs." Record Collector (magazine) (p.92) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "At its wildest, as on the raucous 'Pig Will Not' and the title track, Harvey sounds deranged, freed from any kind of vocal styling or even composure, shrieking and howling over Parish's blues churn." Woman A Man Walked By
$10.35 Bob Dylan once famously remarked about hearing Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" on the radio that he knew his days as the man of the hour were numbered. Fact is, Young is the only guy who can even reasonably compete with Dylan for the title of rock's greatest songwriter, and while "Dylan in the '60s" has long been a cliched assessment of an undeniable rock hot streak, so too has become "Neil Young in the '70s." While Dylan has long culled material from his archive, Young has been reluctant to do the same. He's now joining the fray full force with LIVE AT MASSEY HALL 1971--the second live release in an ongoing series from Young's legendarily deep vaults.
The performance comes between the release of AFTER THE GOLDRUSH and HARVEST and hot on the heels of DEJA VU, basically the last time Young's eminently enthralling man-child persona of "I Am A Child" and "Helpless" held sway over the obstinate, electric crank of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT and RUST NEVER SLEEPS. The set is pure magic. Young still seems ...

Woman A Man Walked By
$11.49 Voomz is Marcelle Dandy. Making indie-electric sounds described as "Bjork meets Blondie," she has been hovering over Los Angeles caught in a twisted love affair with her synthesizer and computer. After getting an early start in musical theater and piano lessons as a kid in Indiana, Voomz studied at Berklee College of Music for two summers during high school and was accepted into their degree program. However, Voomz decided to head west instead and was soon carrying her guitar as a singer/songwriter playing in coffee shops and singing with a rock band in dive bars throughout Los Angeles. After Voomz bought her first synth, her music started to evolve as she became more and more intrigued with computer and electronic music. She started programming homemade beats that she would perform off her laptop with a live drummer and DJ. Voomz has since played the Los Angeles and Hollywood club circuit performing everywhere from Spaceland, The Viper Room, The Whiskey, and the Roxy to the legendary music hall The Troubador. These live shows have led to invites and performances along the California coastline at the San Diego Beauty Bar and The Minna Art Gallery in San Francisco. After several homemade demos and a deal with an indie label that seemed to be standing still a year and a half later, Voomz decided to start her own label and release self-produced records in the meantime. Her self-taught skills on ProTools and other programs had developed significantly while making ...
