| | Harry Belafonte Early Years At Capitol Records CD Harry Belafonte Discography of CDs
Before Harry Belafonte struck upon his iconic, multimillion-selling combination of calypso, folk, and pop, he briefly made a go of it as a more traditional crooner in the Bing Crosby/Mel Torme mold. THE EARLY YEARS AT CAPITOL RECORDS collects material from this era, and also includes the album SWINGIN' CALYPSOS by another early calypso star, the influential, if largely forgotten, Lord Flea. The unusual juxtaposition of Belafonte's ultra-smooth, orchestra-backed vocals on tracks such as "I Still Get a Thrill" and "Farewell To Arms" next to Lord Flea's gritty island party music serves to drive home the importance of Belafonte's later brand of genre-mixing genius.

Early Years At Capitol Records songs
$18.99 The nylon-string guitar has no more powerful advocate on the current jazz scene than Ken Hatfield, whose virtuosic finger-style technique is matched by an exceptional compositional gift and who succeeds better than most at stretching the boundaries of his instrument while playing and writing music that feels as friendly and naturally straight-ahead as anything by Charlie Byrd or Wes Montgomery. On his fifth album under his own name he leads a trio that includes the very tasteful drummer Jeff Hirschfeld and bassist Hans Glawischnig; the program consists entirely of Hatfield originals written in a variety of styles, all of them lyrical and melodically attractive. Highlights include a lovely jazz waltz entitled "A Demain" and the not-terribly-funky but very fun "Funkissimo," which features some slippery second-line drumming and a fantastic arco bass solo by Glawischnig. Perhaps loveliest of all is the impressionistic "Berceuse," which betrays a deep Ralph Towner influence (and on which Glawischnig's intonation is maybe not quite as exact as it should be). Very highly recommended overall. ~ Rick Anderson

Sam Cooke's death in 1964 left a huge void in the world of soul music not filled until Al Green's breakthrough in the early '70s. Although many great male soul singers came and went in the years following Cooke's death, none came close to the smooth and creamy style that translated to consistent cross-over success. While Otis Redding was gritty and James Brown relentless, in Green's hands, R&B was sophisticated and suave. GREATEST HITS basks in a style of sultry soul that Green inherited from Cooke.
Yet, Green's style owed as much to producer ...
