Dolby Digital 5.1 Re Russian master Aleksandr Sokurov (THE SUN, RUSSIAN ARK, MOTHER AND SON) has produced another majestic achievement with ALEXANDRA. In a rare instance of working from his own original script, Sokurov tells the simple tale of a woman in the twilight of her life who embarks on a special journey. As the story unfolds, Sokurov's deeper purpose is revealed, resulting in a work that speaks profoundly about the corrosive nature of war. Opera star Galina Vishnevskaya is Alexandra. She hasn't seen her grandson in seven years and, understanding that her life is coming to an end, she decides to visit him at his army camp in war-torn Chechnya. What at first is a beautiful reunion gradually becomes conflicted, as Alexandra is forced to accept the painful realization that she may no longer be the most important figure in her grandson's life. Furthermore, the strain the war is placing on these young men, combined with their restrictive conditions, is even harder for her to bear. When her grandson must return to work, Alexandra floats around the camp, having brief but profound interactions with many different soldiers. While these exchanges vary from the humorous to the dramatic, there is a striking purity and simplicity to Sokurov's overall vision--not to mention Vishnevskaya's unforgettable, heartbreaking performance--that makes ALEXANDRA feel universal and profound. Alexandra Reviews: "The luminous humanity that characterizes the films of Alexander Sokurov is in full force in ALEXANDRA....It is a work of the utmost simplicity but is charged with the eternal complexities and contradictions of both love and war."-- Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times "[A] startling, elliptical war parable by the intense Russian director Alexander Sokurov..." -- Grade: A--- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]his is a powerful treatise on conflict's human toll....Rarely has combat seemed so savage or futile."-- David Parkinson, Empire "ALEXANDRA is absolutely convincing as poetry, and in fact more nuanced and moving than any other recent Sokurov film....And Sokurov's speed-of-thought cutting has never been more fluent."-- Tony Rayns, Sight and Sound Alexandra | List Price | $29.95 (You save $8.46) | | Studio | Cinema Guild, Inc. | | Orig Year | 2007 | | All Time Sales Rank | 60256 | | CD Universe Part number | 7900852 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Apr 28, 2009 | | Rating | Not Rated | | Running Time | 91 Minutes | | Movie Details | Color |

Alexandra DVD In a desolate, sun-scorched corner of the world, an elderly woman has come to see her beloved grandson, a young officer stationed at a remote military outpost. With the enemy just beyond the compound, she wanders the barracks, observing the routines of military life, before making a sudden trip into the outlying countryside. Featuring a mesmerizing performance by Russian opera legend Galina Vishnevskaya, Alexandra is a viscerally powerful new film from the great Alexander Sokurov.

$7.75 Youth gangs took over the slums of Rio de Janiero during the 1960s and didn't relinquish their stronghold until the mid-1980s. Only a sucker wouldn't have turned to crime and this is exactly how naive teen Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues) views himself. His attempts in illegal activity fail as he finds potential victims too friendly. Equally unsuccessful in love, he regularly fails to lose his virginity. Blood spills throughout the streets of the Ciudad de Deus as gang leader Li'l Ze (Leandro Firmino da Hora) is challenged by local druglords and a gang of pre-teens known as the Runts. Rocket shoots all of this action with his weapon of choice, a camera.
Director Fernando Meirelles combines visual flashiness with dark history in telling the story of three decades of unrest in underground Rio de Janiero. Technically flawless, the Brazilian film uses a rapid-cutting style to flash back and forth in time. Cinematographer Cesar Charlone shoots with an overexposed glow in a film that may seem numb to violence, but reveres photography. Director Meirelles was assisted by Katia Lund, a filmmaker who had previously shot in the Rio ghettos.
A poor boy grows up in a violent environment but realizes that he sees reality differently than others. In Brazilian Portuguese with English subtitles.

$53.35 This ambitious, black-and-white, seven-hour Hungarian film from idiosyncratic auteur Bela Tarr follows the inhabitants of a run-down Hungarian village still reeling from the collapse of Communism. Based on Laszlo Karsznahorkai's novel and filmed over a period of two years, the critically acclaimed epic takes the time to explore each character's unique point of view.
Hailed by critics as landmark cinema, SATANTANGO transcends all genres, surpasses all styles. The story revolves around an abandoned agricultural collective, where a handful of lost and lonely characters eke out a living until a charismatic con man arrives to shake things up. However, the richness of the film comes from the director's singular vision. A master of melancholy, and a virtuoso of the long take and immaculate composition, he has been rightly called "one of the most innovative and accomplished auteurs in filmmaking today"(MoMA). The DVD premiere of SATANTANGO is a new digital transfer supervised by Bela Tarr himself.

Alexandra movie DVD
$13.39 This two-CD compilation, assembled from the Walker Brothers' three albums and various singles released by Philips between 1965 and 1967, gives a good overview of their U.K. history without limiting itself to their hits. The sound quality is good if not exceptional -- one gets the sense that another round of remastering would be in order (and while we're talking about sound, wouldn't one like to see a Mobile Fidelity reissue on the Walker Brothers or, for that matter, Scott Walker's best solo stuff?). And the track order isn't chronological -- their two best-known songs, which were not their first two U.K. singles -- occupy the opening two slots on disc one. So this set is lacking in some attributes that one would, ideally, like to se. On the other hand, all of the songs that one would like to see are here somewhere, and the annotation is thorough if not extensive. For anyone starting a collection of the classic Walker Brothers' material, this set -- which also carries the subtitle "My Ship Is Coming In" -- is a great place to start and finish, assuming that one doesn't wish to own everything that they did during their British period. ~ Bruce Eder
2009 two CD set from the '60s trio, who have become one of the most revered Pop outfits of their time. Though they were not brothers and came from California, The Walker Brothers became international stars with a slew of great singles that were as unique as they were catchy. The British and European audiences were (and remain) their most devoted fanbase, although other countries have come around to The Walker Brothers special kind of magic in recent decades. 36 tracks including 'Make It Easy On Yourself', 'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore' and many others. Universal.

Alexandra film
$22.45 This adaptation of Henryk Sienkiewicz's novel was made on a big budget in the author's native country, Poland. Set during the reign of the Roman emperor Nero, QUO VADIS tells the story of a young soldier, Marcus Vinicius, who falls under the sway of Christianity when he falls in love with Lygia, a believer in the growing religion.
Acclaimed filmmaker Jerzy Kawalerowicz directs his last film--one of the most lavish and expensive films ever made in Poland. This familiar tale of Christianity set against the backdrop of Emperor Nero and the burning of Rome begins when soldier Marcus Vinicius returns to the Eternal City for rest and relaxation. Polish action star Boguslaw Linda costars as Vinicius's uncle Petronius, an official in good standing with the corrupt Emperor. Vinicius's loyalties are tested when he becomes interested in the teachings of Jesus through his sweetheart Lygia.
