CD reissue of this title from the innovative German Electronica outfit, one of the most influential instrumental outfits of the 20th century. Tangerine Dream has never produced anything calculated to make the masses jump off their chairs and start screaming Top 40 tunes, but they have managed to have an immense impact in the world of Electronic and soundtrack music. Their 107 (and counting) studio, live and soundtrack releases have their own driving hypnotic pieces that might differ from release to release, but they are all uniquely Tangerine Dream. | | John Oates Phunk Shui CD (2002) (Import) Bonus Track; Japan
Springtime In Nagasaki music CDs
$38.59 John Oates took his time to release his first solo album -- about 20 years after Hall & Oates' commercial and creative peak, and 22 years after his partner, Daryl Hall, stepped outside of their duo for his superb solo debut, Sacred Songs. Unlike Hall, who delivered two ambitious, rock-oriented albums and then moved back to familiar pop-soul territory, Oates dives right in with pop-soul and lite-funk spiked with a little bit of acoustic folk, with the rather ridiculously titled Phunk Shui. Since he sang lead only on occasion on Hall & Oates albums (and never once had a hit single where he sang lead), it's been easy to take Oates' abilities as a vocalist for granted. Here, his smooth, soulful falsetto is front and center, and it sounds sweet and warm. It's nice to hear him given a showcase, but it's hard not to wish that the production wasn't quite as glossy, and that the songs were a little bit better, with hooks that actually caught hold. This sort of glides by on the surface, and while it's pleasant enough, it doesn't really offer much that's memorable. It's nice ...

Springtime In Nagasaki CD music
$11.98 The follow-up to 2005's hit HOW TO SAVE A LIFE, THE FRAY is a similarly enticing blend of earnest lyrics, anthemic choruses, and catchy tunes. The Denver quartet have crafted 10 well-shaped, melodic pieces of polished alternative pop-rock, spearheaded by the first single, "You Found Me." Starting with the piano-based pop of acts like Coldplay or Snow Patrol, but adding enough guitar-based muscle and emo-tinged grit to keep from sounding like mere imitators, the Fray also feature the powerful vocals of frontman Isaac Slade, who is particularly memorable on "Where the Story Ends" and "We Build Then We Break."
The Fray's sophomore release picks up where How to Save a Life left off, reprising the same blend of piano-led ballads and midtempo pop/rock that helped establish the band in 2005. International tours and platinum-selling singles may have turned the Fray into a superstar act, but the actual songcraft remains virtually unchanged, with songs like "You Found Me" and "Enough for Now" sounding eerily similar to their predecessors. Those parallels are strengthened by producers Aaron Johnson and Mike Flynn, both of whom helmed How to Save a Life and repeat the job here to predictable effect. What's different, then, is the occasional "widening" of the Fray's sound; the rock numbers are slightly louder (culminating in a percussive, distorted breakdown during "We Build Then We Break") and the ballads somewhat softer, with "Ungodly Hour" standing out as the sparsest of the bunch. The band seems uncomfortable with either extreme, however, either overshooting the rockers or reducing ...
