With the Stooges' chaos, the Buzzcocks' bratty joie de vivre, and a pinch of Motley Crue's debauchery, New Zealand's the Datsuns dash into their fourth record, 2009's HEADSTUNTS, with reckless rock abandon. However, that's not to say the record is dated at all; the opening four tracks burst out with a fury, a feel like they could have emanated from any dim bar or musty garage over the half century prior. The foursome even flirt with ambient, glam, and prog rock on "Eye of the Needle," a five-minute phantasmagoria of Brian Eno channeled through Jane's Addiction, coming out the other end with an original sheen.
Personnel: Christian Livingstone (vocals, guitar, piano, Hammond b-3 organ); Rudolf De Borst (vocals, guitar, bass guitar); Philip Buscke Somervell (vocals, guitar, drum set); Scott Newth, Kalle Gustafsson Jerneholm, Heidi Brownstone (vocals); Ben Cole (drum set).

Headstunts album
$15.99 The proliferation of electronica artists throughout the 1990s and 2000s may make it easy to lose sight of the genre's founding fathers, but this compilation of the Orb's BBC sessions, recorded between 1989 and 2001, will rectify that mistake. Forerunners of IDM and ambient house, the Orb's pulsating, psychedelic grooves were tremendously influential, thanks in part to the support of John Peel, who recorded several excellent sessions with the group over the years.
The two-disc set opens with the 20-minute track "A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules from the Center of the Underworld ...
| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Headstunts CD music
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.
Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore West know how brilliant they could be on stage, ...
| | Them Crooked Vultures CD (2009)
Headstunts music CDs
$11.19 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara Watkins; Dave Grohl, who hopped into an empty drummer's chair whenever the opportunity presented itself; and Josh Homme, who set up a mini-empire based entirely on jam sessions. If Them Crooked Vultures brings to mind Homme's projects more than Grohl's or Jones', it's largely due to his role as lead vocalist and how guitar can push a rhythm section as powerful as this to the side, dominating with its grinding riffs and solos. Homme's predilection for precision does reign ...
| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Headstunts songs
$11.99 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of ...
