| | Smashing Pumpkins Gish Vinyl LP (1991)
Kingdom Of Rust CD music
$9.05 The Pumpkins' debut hit the music world at the height of the grunge phenomenon of the early 90s, and exhibited most of the usual characteristics - heavy rock riffs, often reminiscent of GN'R ("Siva," in particular), thrashing guitars and brooding, self-deprecating lyrics. However, GISH rose above the bulk of the college rock bands, revealing more refined songwriting sensibilities courtesy of Billy Corgan, and presenting astonishingly touching ballads ("Crush"). Clearly much more raw and naive than the band's later work on the accomplished SIAMESE DREAM and the ambitious MELON COLLIE..., this album, nevertheless, set out the Pumpkins' agenda for rock and hinted at what was to come.
Recorded at Smart Studios, Madison, Wisconsin.
Smashing Pumpkins: Billy Corgan (vocals); James Iha (guitar); D'arcy (bass, background vocals); Jimmy Chamberlin (drums).

| Neil Young Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere Vinyl LP (1969) Remastered
Kingdom Of Rust music CDs
$21.09 Neil Young's second album yielded several of his most enduring hits (including the title tune, "Cowgirl In The Sand," "Cinnamon Girl," and "Down By The River") and firmly established him as a solo artist of the first rank. Though it's impossible to narrow the catalog of Young and Crazy Horse down to one representative document, this is about as close as you're likely to get. This was Young's first collaboration with the Horse, and it's still one of that group's defining recorded moments. As in much of Young's subsequent work, the feeling of despair moves unabated through the album, which runs the emotional gamut from laconically desperate to psychotically desperate. Despite the gloom, the heavy electric riffing on "Cinnamon Girl" and "Cowgirl In the Sand"--two surrealistic odes to an idealized muse--is cathartic and invigorating, easily as riveting as the guitar onslaught of anyone from the Stooges to the Velvet Underground.
Young's rootsy, acoustic side comes to the fore on "Round & Round" and "Running Dry." The homespun quality of these songs doesn't leaven the consuming sense of dread that permeates this album, though. Strangely, this expression of angst and emotional disorder became one of Young's most lastingly popular albums, and "Down By The River," "Cinnamon Girl," and "Cowgirl in the Sand" quickly turned into FM staples.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse: Neil Young (vocals, guitar); Danny Whitten (guitar); Billy Talbot (bass); Ralph Molina (drums).
Additional personnel: Robin Lane (vocals); Bobby Notkoff (violin).
| | Lupe Fiasco Cool Vinyl LP (2007) Bonus CD
Kingdom Of Rust songs
$21.35 Building on the success of his acclaimed debut, FOOD & LIQUOR, Chi-town representative Lupe Fiasco returns with a concept-themed record, THE COOL. Evenly balancing intelligent lyricism, poetic symbolism, and catchy pop-themed production, Lupe's sophomore effort partially follows the story of the ghetto Everyman, the Cool, in his ever-changing relationship with the Streets and the Game. Still, it's not all high-concept here. Lupe also celebrates the spoils of superstar glamour on the catchy single, "Superstar," and the travel-fantasy track, "Paris, Tokyo," and enters more experimental territory with the help of British trip-hop act, U.N.K.L.E. on "Hello/Goodbye (Uncool)." THE COOL features production work from Soundtrakk, Chris & Drop, Patrick Stump, and Chris Goss, among others, as well as guest appearances by Sarah Green, GemStones, Pooh Bear, Nikki Jean, Bishop G, Graham Burris, Unkle, Matthew Santos, and Snoop Dogg.

| | Transplants Vinyl LP (2002)
Kingdom Of Rust CD music
$14.79 The self-titled Transplants album represents Rancid vocalist Tim Armstrong's variant on that great rock & roll staple, the side project. As is often the case with such endeavors by members of famous bands, TRANSPLANTS was recorded bit by bit over the course of a couple of years (presumably during Armstrong's downtime from Rancid). Still, it all hangs together with its raw, organic vibe. Though loops and synthesizer are present nearly every cut, the album maintains an agreeably rough-and-ready rock & roll feel. Fans of Rancid should feel at home with the punk quotient here, but healthy doses of hip-hop, funk, and reggae are injected into the mix as well, and Armstrong shares vocals with cohort Rob Aston throughout the album.
Transplants: Tim Armstrong (vocals, guitar, bass, samples); Rob Aston (vocals); Travis Barker (drums).
Additional personnel: Davy Havock, Son Doobie, Eric Ozenick (vocals); Dave Garlock (guitar, synthesizer, bass, background vocals); Craig Fairbaugh (guitar); Vic Ruggiero (piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Matt Freeman (bass); Lars Frederiksen (background vocals); Brody Armstrong.
