Some things are immune to trends, and Ronnie James Dio's golden voice is one of them. The alleged inventor of the devil-horns symbol (as it pertains to metal) had a memorable stint as the singer of Black Sabbath after St. Ozzy's departure, leaving behind two classic albums in MOB RULES and HEAVEN AND HELL. Though the rest of Sabbath has mainly focused on working with Ozzy in the 2000s, a 2007 tour with Dio whetted their appetites for a fresh collaboration as Heaven & Hell. The result, THE DEVIL YOU KNOW, stands proudly beside the band's prime material. Like anything associated with Dio, the music is unapologetically operatic, with almost every song clocking in at around or over five minutes. The singer wails his tales of darkness and mystical evil over Tony Iommi's trademark doom-inflected chords, heavy as a marble tomb and churning like a witch's cauldron.

This is a great release for fans of Dio-era Black Sabbath. The band and Dio's voice are in top form, but my only complaint is the abundance of slow & mid-tempo songs. Most of the songs do not break out of this plodding pace.

 Heavely sounds of Hell
What's to say? This album is just absolutely phenominal, in all it vast glory. Certain and instant classic that is now! Mr Ronnie James Dio's vocals are just out of this world, he sounds just great and fresh. Vin is just pounding the drums as usual, and heavy. Geezer is has got fire in his fingers, and the GREAT that is Mr. Tony Iommi. Just a masterpiece. I recommend it.

Unreal
After the fallout of the Dehumanizer tour, who thought these guys would pull it back together? And who thought they could easily give us the metal record of the year? This is a masterpiece and will be remembered as one of the best recordings in Sabbath (or Heaven & Hell's) history.

You have to give these guys a lot of credit.They can still write and play great music after all these years. This is Metal music the way it should be done.
