The 1996 film stars Billy Bob Thornton as a man who murdered his mother when he was a child. Small-town simpleton Karl Childers has spent most of his life in a mental institution, after he killed his mother and her lover with the eponymous weapon at age 12. Now middle-aged, Karl is deemed healthy -- and released into a world he hasn't inhabited since he was a pre-teen. Although many of Karl's experiences in the "real world" are very troubling, they give him valuable insight into human nature... and himself. But can he completely escape his tragic past?
Academy Award Nominations: 2, including Best Actor--Billy Bob Thornton. Academy Awards: Best Adapted Screenplay. After catching his mother and her boyfriend "in flagrante delicto" and dispatching both of them with a farm implement known as a sling blade, a simpleminded 11-year-old boy is sent to a mental hospital where he spends the next 25 years. Upon his release, the emotionally and mentally stunted man-child returns to his Arkansas hometown and takes a job in a local garage, only to have the past inexorably repeat itself. An indie-film triumph, adapted by star-writer-director Thornton from his 1993 short, "Some Folks Call It a Sling Blade." Academy Award Nominations: 2, including Best Actor--Billy Bob Thornton. Great Movie I have seen this movie several times and, to me, it never gets old. The lesson to be learned in this movie never gets old either. The story is a little slow for this new generation of action every 7 minutes movie-goers, but the entire movie itself is truly exceptional. Outstanding I can't get enough of this movie. I can watch this flick day in and day out. Billy Bob Thorton has played this part to the tee. I grew up in a town like this and many things really are on the money. For instance Dwight yokum plays his part and reminds me of some of the people in that little town. Observe The Heart I think everyone could learn a great lesson from this movie. People are so quick to judge a person by their outer appearance. If you learn to take time and see a person from the inside, this world would be a greater place. Wonderful job by ALL characters!! Sling Blade review
$23.85 Michael Radford (IL POSTINO) brings an artful touch to Edward Anderson's screenplay with FLAWLESS, a serious account of a remarkable heist at London Diamond, one of the world's premier diamond holders. Set in 1960s London, the film focuses on Laura Quinn (Demi Moore), a woman so driven she's chosen career over personal life and found her way into the boys' club known as the diamond business. Ironically, it's Mr. Hobbs (Michael Caine), a night janitor, who takes note of Laura's frustration. The seemingly simple Mr.Hobbs finds a way to use this to his advantage, proposing a plan that will only work with Laura's cooperation. When Laura rejects the ...
