(1 Customer Review)
Continuing the arc they established on CHIMAIRA and RESURRECTION, Cleveland sextet Chimaira hone their Pantera-meets-Hatebreed approach with brutal, straightforward metalcore. Erasing any lingering associations with the late '90s nu metal scene they were unfairly lumped in with in their early days, the band deliver nine epics replete with monster riffs, pummeling double bass drums, and guttural vocals on their fifth full-length, THE INFECTION. Producer Ben Schigel (who also helmed THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF REASON and CHIMAIRA) returns to the fold and provides Matt DeVries and Rob Arnold's twin guitars the sonic thickness they need to dominate all comers.
Lyricist: Mark Hunter.
Personnel: Mark Hunter (vocals); Rob Arnold (guitar); Chris Spicuzza (keyboards, electronics); Andols Herrick (drums).
Photographers: Robert Dobi; Todd Bell.Alternative Press (p.118) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[These] Clevelanders have gotten sincerely heavy and brutal on their three successive releases, and THE INFECTION is a very solid effort." CMJ - "Chimaira's thick, heavy guitar brew is still bubbling, allowing for layers of riffage to occur simultaneously and blisteringly." Billboard (p.64) - "Chimaira strides confidently toward a new direction on its fifth album, THE INFECTION, propelling each song with unflagging determination." Infection album
$11.05 With Sepultura-like vocals and ferocious, Slayer-style guitar riffs, these scary-looking, tattooed dudes from Connecticut have successfully crossed over from the hardcore scene to the metal scene, touring both with Ozzfest and Sepultura. Lyrically, they are definitely an East Coast hardcore band, with song titles like "Empty Promises" and "Betrayed By Life." Aside from being straight-edged, betrayal is the singular theme, for whatever reason, in East Coast hardcore and among all the zillions of bands that have copied that style. But Hatebreed's music is more influenced by death metal, or at least the bands that are more accomplished within that genre, because these guys can play their instruments. The drums, bass, and guitars all sound like a well-oiled machine churning out a massive sound. The vocals also have a more menacing, metal-like quailty. The result is one furious album, heavier than anything Slayer has done in a decade. ~ Adam Bregman

| | Dope Felons And Revolutionaries CD (1999) Bonus Track
Infection music CDs
$7.59 Dope plays a basic style of speed metal while lead singer/rhythm guitarist/songwriter Edsel Dope sings in a raging bass voice reminiscent of Motörhead's Lemmy Kilmister. The sentiments expressed in his uncompromising, obscenity-littered lyrics can be accurately summed up in such song titles as "Pig Society," "Shit Life," "America the Pitiful," and the all-purpose "Everything Sucks." "F*ck tomorrow" is the chorus of "Spine for You," a song that also contains the lyric, "Bam, I'd like to bash you in the head." The unbilled eighth track on the disc is a cover of N.W.A.'s "Fuck tha Police." The CD booklet is adorned with cartoon artwork depicting the album's themes, and interpreting the lyrics as comic-book fantasy is the kindest way to treat them. ~ William Ruhlmann

| | Dope No Regrets CD (2009)
Infection songs
$13.89 One would hardly expect a band called Dope to sing about holding hands and sharing sodas, and on their fifth record, NO REGRETS, the Chicago quintet bring it with middle fingers raised defiantly high. Extolling Satan ("6-6-Sick"), violence ("Violence"), and seriously bad girls ("Dirty World") never sounded so undeniable as the band rips through thickly distorted, industrial-nu-metal grooves--a style they have thankfully stuck with regardless of popular fads in metal. NO REGRETS is the band's most satisfying sonic battering ram yet balancing crowd pleasers (including a great cover of Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell" and a guest appearance by Black Label Society/ex-Ozzy guitarist Zakk Wylde) with no-holds-barred, Nine Inch Nails influenced sonic assaults.

| | Hatebreed For The Lions (Future Shop) CD (2009)
Infection album
$14.29 Modern metalcore came from a bubbling cauldron of classic hardcore punk, thrash metal, and various shades of crossover, so it's fitting that one of the genre's leading lights is paying tribute to the original songs and artists that helped form them. FOR THE LIONS shows stalwart hardcore brutes Hatebreed in their usual industrial-strength heavy mode, playing covers of punk, hardcore, and metal songs from influences like Black Flag, Bad Brains, Sick of It All, and the Misfits (whose "Hatebreeders," covered here, gave the band their name.) The band largely eschews the obvious songs in favor of some big bands' lesser-known tracks. Their ferocious take on Slayer's "Ghosts of War" is a natural fit for Hatebreed, and Metallica's "Escape" gives the band a chance to inject a little melody into the mix. Some songs, like Cro-Mags' "It's the Limit" and ...
| | DevilDriver Pray For Villains CDs (2009) With DVD; Special Edition
Infection CD music
$18.39 Limited edition with 4 bonus tracks: “Self Affliction”,”Dust Be Destiny”, “Damning The Heavens” & “Wasted Years” plus a bonus DVD. 19 tracks.
It seems like with each successive release, DevilDriver keep turning up the dial of heaviness. And on their fourth studio album, 2009's PRAY FOR VILLAINS, the group continues plowing forward with this approach. Screams, growls, raging riffs, and impressively tight drumming are all crucial ingredients to the DevilDriver metallic recipe. Produced by former Machine Head guitarist Logan Mader, PRAY FOR VILLAINS hits you like a ton of bricks from the get-go with the album-opening title track (and leadoff single) and never lets up, as evidenced by such brutal tracks as "Fate Stepped In" and "Forgiveness Is a Six Gun," among other dangerous ditties. PRAY FOR VILLAINS confirms once and for all that Dez Fafara has totally shed the nu-metal schtick of Coal Chamber for the 100 percent pure headbanging fury of ...
| | Ralphie May Prime Cut CDs (2007)
Infection music CDs
$15.89 Comedian Ralphie May is both large (his girth is hard to miss) and in charge on 2007's PRIME CUT. May riffs on his appearance on CELEBRITY FIT CLUB in a skit of the same name, while offering wry commentary on other aspects of pop culture including Tivo, flip-flops, mullets, and the Food Channel. Streetwise and sassy, May's vernacular delivery is influenced by hip-hop culture, an approach that gives his incisive, satirical barbs all the more zing. PRIME CUT is available as an ...
