By the time Alibi rolled around, Vandenberg was fast losing steam and creative ideas (though the cover with the Alligator bursting out from underground near ancient temples is a refreshing ode to surrealism in a metal dominated field of leather and makeup). The group had fallen prey to the then-contemporary, overly produced, highly glossed sound that glam metal was to bring to the forefront of commercial hard rock, and failed miserably at conforming to the sound (and the label's) demands. There are moments where the band still show traces of their original promise, but those are few and far between. Shortly after this, group founder and lead guitarist Adrian Vandenberg would disband the group and join David Coverdale's Whitesnake project at the pinnacle of the band's commercial success. Legend has it after a failed audition with mega-group Thin Lizzy, Adrian Vandenberg went back to the drawing board and decided to start his own band. Poised with an axe to grind and several hard rock influences easily spotted from a mile away, Vandenberg and his band of gypsies were poised to take over the hard rock scene with their 1982 debut. Overall, Vandenberg is a fiery testament to Vandenberg's skill as a guitarist. He shreds with the best of them, taking cues from Hendrix, Page, and a little bit of Tony Iommi. Of course there are the gratuitous moments of guitar acrobatics ("Wait") and the obligatory power ballad ("Burning Heart") but that really doesn't detract too much from the band's main focus: to deliver a solid hard rock record that is easily one of the most underrated debut metal albums of the '80s. ~ Rob Theakston

Although Michael Schenker is not involved, UFO's 2006 release The Monkey Puzzle sees four-fifths of the classic lineup back in place -- singer Phil Mogg, bassist Pete Way, guitarist/keyboardist Paul Raymond, and drummer Andy Parker are all back on board. However, the group has hired certainly no slouch to replace Schenker on the six-string: Vinnie Moore. While they've taken numerous stabs over the years at replicating the magic of when Schenker is present -- with varying results -- tracks such as "Who's Fooling Who" and "Down by the River" contain the classic UFO sound, and certainly wouldn't have sounded out of place on Lights Out or Obsession. Finnish power-metal stalwarts Stratovarius have been kicking around since the 1980s, undergoing many personnel changes along the way, but their twelfth album, POLARIS, is the first without guitarist Timo Tolkki, who left the band before they embarked on this project. Other than that, things seem to be status quo in Stratovariusland, as the album delivers the kind of bold, anthemic epics the group is known for, with their trademark mix of prog-rock keyboard flourishes, elaborate production, and '80s-influenced metal pyrotechnics. England's Hard-Fi are yet another in a long line of early-2000s bands inflated to heroic proportions by the U.K. press. Like Franz Ferdinand, the Kaiser Chiefs, and the Arctic Monkeys before them, Hard-Fi's sound is steeped in angular guitars, hook-heavy melodies, and push-and-pull dance rhythms. But while it's tempting to dismiss the band as the mere product of hype, overlooking them would be a mistake.
