Stone Sour isn't the first successful Slipknot side project; the Murderdolls (just barely) beat them to the starting gate. Like that group, though, Stone Sour actually started out long before Slipknot, but was ultimately revisited as an alternative to the Slipknot grind. Knotmen (if you will) Corey Taylor and Jim Root and their Stone Sour brethren offer nu-metal that's fully as hard-hitting as that of their day-job group, but with considerably more thoughtful compositional techniques and melodic sensibility. Sure, Taylor occasionally breaks into a gut-wrenching scream, but just as often he's twisting his voice around a serpentine melodic line that brings Alice in Chains to mind more than anything in the nu-metal lexicon.

Stone Sour album
$10.39 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed relatively dry and upfront, giving the album a bracing, fist-to-the-face force. Jackhammer tracks such as "Hate Worldwide" and "Psychopathy Red" are short, no muss-no fuss blasts of double kick drum, minor key-riffing fury, with an unrelenting intensity that requires little in the way of sonic or textural variation. The title track, on the other hand, is a somewhat slower dose of classic chugga-chugga head-banging which showcases Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman's shrieking, emotive guitar work. Remaining true to Slayer's defiantly old school sound, WORLD PAINTED ...
| | Epica Design Your Universe CD (2009)
Stone Sour CD music
$13.15 Dutch pomp-metal band Epica, fronted by classically trained mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, released their second album for Nuclear Blast only a year after their label debut, the more unique The Classical Conspiracy. That two-disc live set found them performing a mix of classical works and their own songs with backing by a full orchestra and choir. This album offers more of their bombastic goth metal songs, with Simons' vocals floating atop an ever flowing stream of complicated drumming, epic riffs, and shredtastic solos. The use of orchestral instruments to add John Williams-like climaxes is intermittently successful, but the music is just as frequently stripped down to an unaccompanied piano or to just the rock band, and that works, too. The very occasional interruption of male death growls is less necessary; frankly, the band should just let Simons do her Sarah Brightman-esque thing and keep the riffs cranking behind her. If you like this sort of thing (Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, After Forever, Leaves' Eyes, etc., etc.), or if you're a big Andrew Lloyd Webber fan, this is exactly the sort of thing you'll like. ~ Phil Freeman

| | Anvil This Is Thirteen CD (2009) Bonus Track
Stone Sour album
$12.45 While Anvil never really got the chance to make a bid for mainstream success, and it's too late now -- they've got an affectionate documentary about themselves, the success of which has gotten them a deal to release this album, but the industry just doesn't make stars anymore, certainly not in metal. The best Anvil can hope for is that they'll be able to go out (or carry on for a few more years, if they choose to do so) with some self-respect. Luckily, THIS IS THIRTEEN is more than good enough to achieve that goal. The production by Chris Tsangarides, who worked with the band in the early '80s, showcases their still impressive instrumental skills, and while the lyrics range between functional and boneheaded, Steve "Lips" Kudlow's voice is powerful, reminiscent of Ian Gillan on the more midtempo material and Suicidal Tendencies' Mike Muir on the thrashier tracks. Most of the songs on THIS IS THIRTEEN are in more of a traditional hard rock/metal vein than the proto-thrash of Anvil's peak years, though "Axe to Grind" and "Game Over" prove that they can still muster a headlong assault that would put young retro acts like Warbringer, Fueled By Fire et al.

| | Tool 10,000 Days CD (2006)
Stone Sour CD music
$11.75 To its legion of fans, everything the band Tool does is an event, but the elaborate plan behind their sporadic release schedule--roughly five years, on average, between albums--is due primarily to the time and effort the band packs into each successive effort. To title their fourth album 10,000 DAYS, then, isn't as much an exaggeration as it would seem. Tool are America's most consummate mainstream perfectionists, revitalizing progressive rock to the grandeur of its '70s heyday, but updated with technocratic tension and existential dread not known to previous generations. Perhaps it's the development of more musical genres at the turn of the millennium, but it's also Tool's ability to take what is needed from each and leave the florid excesses behind, forming a seething gray core of angst and release across epic-length songs that are as accessible as they are complex. The material on 10,000 DAYS provides typically thought-provoking grist for the band's lyrical handwringing ("Vicarious" tackles reality television as the bane of culture; "Wings for Marie" is a two-part suite on the death of vocalist Maynard James Keenan's mother), and is as musically engaging as ever, finding the band at their most powerful since 1996's AENIMA.

| | Matt Beal Contributions For An Atom Bomb CD (2006)
Stone Sour songs
$13.89 Rock and Roll isn’t dead, Matt Beal is here. Born to play guitar and destined to rock, his songs are well crafted and the musicianship is top notch. Matt Beal is an accomplished Rock guitarist. The blistering pick scrapes and cranked tube amps are sure to satisfy old school Rock fans. With a sound of his own Matt resurrects the dying art of the guitar solo and incorporates leads reminiscent of Slash and Randy Rhoads. Although true to his Rock roots each song is diverse in its style and delivery, and they’re catchy. The messages range from political and on the verge of rebellion to deep and introspective. His voice is an extension of his personality and has the qualities of Bon Scott, Chris Robinson, and Ozzy while remaining fresh and ...
| | Hail Marys Faith Forgiveness Sweet Revenge CD (2007)
Stone Sour album
$11.49 The Hail MarysFaith, Forgiveness, Sweet RevengeSelf-releasedSt Louis street-rockers with a foxy blonde up front. She (Katie), has a nice Brody-esque croak and the fellas ably back her up with glammy melodies and tough, snarly rock n’ roll. I searched this one high n’ low for their definitive rock n’ roll anthem, but I don’t think they’ve written it yet. In the meantime, there’s a slew of black-eyed party-wreckers to contend with, including “Friday Nite Show” which sounds a like a punky Joan Jett tune, the furious gear-jammer “Faster Pussycat” (no relation to Taime Downe, but probably a close cuzzin to Tura Satana), and the oddly affecting “I’ll Be Ok”, which is the cry-in-your-beer number. If your prone to that sorta behavior. Like I said, their big, timeless hit ain’t here yet, but I am sure they will write it soon. The more I listen to this, the more I like it. What can I say? I am charmed. Fans of the Distillers, Dropkick Murphys, Boondock Saints (the movie), all that bust-your-nose-then-buy-you-a-drink stuff, ...

The first eight tracks are taken from the previously unreleased soundtrack to Cherkazoo, a children's story Gillan labored on in the early '70s. The remainder of the record is devoted to sessions Gillan cut between his departure from Purple in 1973 and the beginning of his solo career in 1976. These are sought-after among collectors, but outside listeners will undoubtedly be taken with Cherkazoo, a delightful collection of Psychedelic Pop and whimsical British music hall numbers.
