Jazz guitarist Joel Harrison is of that modern generation which embraces a wide variety of musical styles and genres while still devoting itself to jazz. Harrison acknowledges inspiration from rock music (he's recorded an entire disc of George Harrison songs), bebop, world music, and country music. On URBAN MYTHS, Harrison tips his guitar case to the first flowerings of fusion--the late 1960s and early `70s discs by Miles Davis, Joe Zawinul, and Chick Corea. Yet there's nothing backward-looking about MYTHS--he doesn't imitate the classic fusion sound, but rather builds upon it in his own manner, adding some blistering blues-rock guitar and free alto sax to the mix. URBAN MYTHS brims with attractive tunes, bracing ensemble playing, and soloing that ranges from lyrical to serrated.

Urban Myths
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than ...
| | Brad Mehldau Trio Day Is Done CD (2005)
Urban Myths
$15.65 Brad Mehldau did an exceptional job of keeping his stellar trio together for seven years, as proven by his fine Art of the Trio dates and 2004's Anything Goes. But Jorge Rossy, the group's drummer, began spending more and more time away from music and at his home in Spain. Mehldau, who is almost prolific in his recording process, recruited drummer Jeff Ballard to replace Rossy on Day Is Done. Ballard has worked off and on with bassist Larry Grenadier in the trio Fly with saxman Mark Turner, so he's not a total stranger to the process. Yet Ballard is a different kind of drummer, more diverse and certainly more kinetic in his approach, as evidenced by this disc. This is Mehldau's most energetic and rigorous recording to date. These ten cuts are comprised mainly of covers, though aside from "Alfie," there isn't anything here approaching a standard. There are tunes here by the Beatles ("She's Leaving Home" and a glorious solo version of "Martha My Dear" with a Scarlatti-esque study in counterpoint to usher it in), ...

| | Overlord Filler CD (1997)
Urban Myths
$10.15 No, it's not metal...1997's full length album Filler was the first cd from the Philadelphia band overlord, and contained all the passable recordings that had accrued up to that time. While the word band is derived from the colloquial expression 'a band of people', its linguistic origins are inapplicable here.Seven tracks were recorded on a Tascam 424 4-track home portastudio and three tracks on a 24-tracks ADAT system, yet it's still hard to tell which batch, in a fidelity sense, sound worse. Some times being catagorized as Lo-Fi isn't intentional...Still, the title track Filler appeared on local radio several times, and the disc received the following notices:PHILADELPHIA WEEKLY (12/10/97): "DISC LIST: THIS WEEK's RECORDS...**** (four stars of four) ...proud to say this awesome record comes straight outta West Philly... It's heavy, heavily infectious new wave that plays like the soundtrack to an action and fang packed episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer; recommended if you like My Dad Is Dead or Ultra Vivid Scene...Exceptional." Article by Jill MacDowell.PHILADELPHIA WEEKLY (4/98): PHILLY MUSIC A TO Z ISSUE" ... On the band's first record, Pasles wrote, sang and played everything but the drums. (The ...
