Released originally in 1960, SWING IS HERE! is packed with the big-band energy of vibraphonist Terry Gibbs, who plays swinging, bop-infused charts here while stretching out with dazzling vibraphone solos. SWING IS HERE! focuses on standards and swing-era classics ("The Song is You" and "Back Bay Shuffle" are among the highlights), and there's no shortage of jump-up energy, since Gibbs takes most of the tunes at fast-clip tempos. The arrangments are tight and punchy, and Gibbs works his usual magic on the vibes, making for a good-time listen straight through.
Personnel: Terry Gibbs (vibraharp); Joe Maini, Bill Perkins, Charlie Kennedy (alto saxophone); Med Flory (tenor saxophone); Jack Schwartz (baritone saxophone); Conte Candoli, Johnny Audino, Al Porcino, Ray Triscari, Stu Williamson (trumpet); Bobby Pring, Bob Edmundson, Tommy Sheppard, Frank Rosolino (trombone); Lou Levy (piano); Buddy Clark (upright bass); Mel Lewis (drums).

Swing Is Here music CDs
$16.45 Growing up in the electrifying urban cityscape of San Juan, Mitch Zorba has spent much of his life embracing the near-mythical cultural fervor of his native Puerto Rico. Likewise, thanks to the warm breezes that whisper along the coast, he has been equally influenced by the enchantment of a tropical paradise. These two robust variables of life in PR—cosmopolitan vigor and a locale equally awash in innate beauty—have been milestones in the cultural development of the actor, singer, writer and theatrical director. Their ultimate convergence is here, on his Spanish-language debut album “Zorba,” an inspired fusion of rock and romance.“I’m passionate about entertaining and producing artistry in any way I can,” he says. “Expression comes from the heart, whether onstage, behind the microphone or from the words behind the delivery.”As a teen-ager, Zorba left Puerto Rico for a short time, pursuing an academic course of studies in New York at the Academy of Dramatic Arts, Hunter College and several professional workshops that led to discipline as a performer in more than a dozen plays.By 21, he founded theater group Mofo Entertainment, producing Paul Rudnick’s controversial piece “The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told,” which he directed. Enthusiastic critical acclaim fostered interest in writing and producing two original musicals, “Attention Craving Maniac” and “Mofongo Americano.”It was chance meeting in New York in the mid-part of this decade that brought Zorba together with Ayhan Sahin, his Turkish collaborator/producer for the album. The pair laid tracks for “Mofongo Americano” at Sahin’s recording studio, and agreed to work toward a full-length project—which didn’t come to fruition until after the allure of the island called Zorba home in 2005. “I began to rekindle my relationship with Puerto Rico, and truly felt more attached than ever—to the culture, my family and friends, and the opportunities,” he says. “It was a profound connection that I couldn’t abandon. I decided to stay in PR permanently.”He was commisioned to produce a documentary film about people with mental disorders, while given another opportunity to showcase “Mofondog Americano,” noting, “I produced an unconventional show made for New York audiences and surprisingly enough, it was received very well by Puerto Ricans.”When ...
