(3 Customer Reviews)
Mandy Moore certainly traveled an impressive distance between the release of her 1999 debut, SO REAL, and 2009's AMANDA LEIGH. To say Moore has grown up is an understatement: the sophisticated, well-crafted singer-songwriter fare of AMANDA LEIGH bears few similarities to the teen-oriented dance-pop that began her career.
The album's title, which announces Moore's real name, is a propos: this is honest, personal music that puts the emphasis on personal expression, both lyrically and musically. Moore hasn't lost her knack for pop hooks, as tunes like the "I Could Break Your Heart Any Day of the Week" attest, but Moore has more in common with Joni Mitchell and Fiona Apple than she does with Britney Spears now. The result is one of her most fully realized and well executed, not to mention enjoyable, efforts.

I was stunned by this album, not being a fan of her early work. Such a delicate, bluesy, lush sound. Every song is a winner in my book. The imagery in the lyrics is beautiful too. A Nice Surprise Moore officially sheds her teen pop image with latest, “Amanda Leigh.” She co-wrote all of the tracks with Michael Viola, who once collaborated with Moore’s husband, Ryan Adams. The opening song, “Merrimack River” is gorgeous and features the chorus, “Don’t say you’re not amazed when you know you are.”/ “And don’t say you’re not afraid when you are.” Her introspective lyrics on “Songs About Home” shows her maturity and honesty as a songwriter, “Oh I am not afraid of alone.”/ “Not afraid of my own missteps.” I was pleasantly surprised about how much I enjoyed, “Amanda Leigh.” This is not the same Moore who sang Candy or broke Vincent Chase’s heart on Entourage. She proves that she is a talented and capable singer/songwriter who could join the ranks of Sheryl Crow, Sarah Maclachlan and even, Joni Mitchell. Amanda Leigh album
$12.59 "Next Big Thing" won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.
This album's title is an ironic one, since Vince Gill has spent plenty of time as the Big Thing in country music. He started out as a hot-pickin' bluegrass guitarist before going solo in the mid-'80s. Some 20 years down the line, Gill has nothing to prove but still plenty to say. As always, his sound is a mix of Rodney Crowell-style '80s New Traditionalism, white soul, and pop, with a touch of that bluegrass influence coming through in his keening tenor. He's still the Mr. Nice Guy of contemporary country, soft-pedaling both the songs and the singing in a manner not unlike the Timothy B. Schmit portion of the Eagles' catalogue.
"Young Man's Town" ups the soul influence and adds a touch of Springsteen sentimentalism, while the aptly named "Old Time Fiddle" shows Gill's traditional roots, and "Without You" ventures into Ray Price-meets-Bob Wills territory. The marimba-laden "We Had it All" is something of a Marty Robbins update, and things close out tastefully with the gentle, soulfully sung "In These Last Few Days." If you're looking for gaudy ...
| | Rosanne Cash Rules Of Travel CD (2003)
Amanda Leigh CD music
$11.29 RULES OF TRAVEL was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
Rosanne Cash started out at the vanguard of progressive country in the late '70s, but although you can't have deeper roots in country music than Johnny Cash's eldest child, she always had a broader vision in mind. Her definitive farewell to country came with 1993's THE WHEEL and she hasn't looked back since. Only one more album popped out in the 10 years between that career milestone and RULES OF TRAVEL, but it sounds like it was time well spent.
With country ever further behind her, Cash goes down a deep, dark, introspective singer/songwriter path via dusky songs simmering with hurt, regret, and hard lessons learned. Cash's artful-but-not-pretentious lyrics are expertly framed by husband/producer/multi-instrumentalist John Leventhal, who plays the lion's share of the instruments and leads his wife toward a sonic state not dissimilar to that of his cohort Shawn Colvin (a crisp folk/rock/pop amalgam). Guest appearances by the likes of Steve Earle and Big Daddy Cash himself make for some variety, but ...
| | Tift Merritt Tambourine CD (2004)
Amanda Leigh music CDs
$12.59 Following in the footsteps of alt-country icons Shelby Lynne, Allison Moorer, and Maria McKee, Tift Merritt gilds her sophomore effort, TAMBOURINE, with country-inflected soul, a stylistic crossroads where Nashville and Muscle Shoals meet. Teaming up with Black Crowes/Jayhawks producer George Drakoulias, Merritt doles out healthy servings of roots-rock that include the chugging "Your Love Made a U-Turn" (with its bubbling bass and chirping harmonies), the jangly "Stray Paper," and the organ-smothered "Wait It Out."
Blessed with a voice reminiscent of a breathier Dusty Springfield, the native Texan has earned plenty of praise from her peers, resulting in a few noteworthy guests popping up on this outing. Pedal-steel virtuoso Robert Randolph checks in on the rollicking "I Am Your Tambourine," while McKee and Jayhawk Gary Louris harmonize on the twangy ...
| | Restless Heart Still Restless CD (2004)
Amanda Leigh songs
$9.25 Still Restless is the first album of all new studio material in 14 years by Restless Heart. Little has changed since their self-titled debut album was released in 1985; their perfect harmonies and smooth country-rock arrangements remain intact. Basically, Restless Heart picked up where they left off in the mid-'90s, sticking with their strong points ...

| | Da' Zoo CD (2009)
Amanda Leigh album
$9.25 It would be easy to dismiss the Puerto Rican quartet Da' Zoo as mere Black Eyed Peas imitators with a Latin lilt. Granted, they do share a similar lineup (a couple rapper/singers and a girl to sing the hooks), a similarly slick and totally Pop-with R&B additives-musical approach, and write the same kind of songs that (usually) hit the spot right between naggingly catchy and completely nagging that the BEP specialize in. What ...
