Chicago II CD music The Vietnam War (and the civil unrest it inspired) was still raging, the counterculture dream had not yet crashed and burned, and rock music could be taken seriously as an "art form" while still generating radio hits. | MUSIC FOR ALL SEASONS! What a diverse selection of music!,You have jazz, rock, classical, pop and ballads!.There are not many albums one can buy even today that can boast of such a variety of sounds. Chicago's songwriting and playing leaves little to be desired! The C.D already has a bevy of hit singles, such as 25 or 6 to 4, Color my world and Make me smile, plus the underated Bobby Lamm song "Poem for the People". Why C.B.S never released "Wake up Sunshine" or Terry Kaths, "The Road" as singles also, is beyond belief! Do yourself a big favour,go out and add this remarkable C.D to your collection! You won't be disappointed. By a reviewer (SYDNEY,AUSTRALIA.) This review is for a different format. |
| New Chicago reissues sound GREAT! This is actually the first Chicago album I ever bought. The sound is again first rate and the new liner notes are very nice, although I wish Rhino had included the original pictures that came with the original vinly LP in 1970. I've been playing the first 4 tracks non-stop for the past week! This features the first 'hits' Chicago had including '25 Or 6 To 4' 'Make Me Smile' and 'Colour My World'. I don't care for this new digipact format (prefer the jewel case) but you can get more information on the covers and back I'm told. Again, an essential buy for early Chicago fans. | A melodic masterpiece This was the first "double album" that I bought at a discounted price. In the UK the first hit from the group "I'm a man" was much more rock than jazz and this is what I expected with Chicago II. Right from the first track, "Movin in"it was obvious that they would not be restricted to producing singular rock/pop/jazz material. This was a fusion of each. The first pop oriented material arrives at tracks 5 and 6 with "Make me smile" and "Wake up sunshine". These were released as singles. Next comes a seamless passage of melodic interplay between horns/organ/drums and guitar which ends with "colour my world". This was also released as a single. The killer track on the album was of course 25 or 6 to 4 with the incredible guitar work of Terry Kath in it's extended version. The rest of the album is dominated with a Gershwin style elegy to a love lost possibly through a death or traumatic event. Although not very fashionable at the time for a younger listener, this has become more impressive as time has passed. How could a group who later was to be so associated with AOR produce something like this ? Overcome your reluctance and find out by listening to this music before your ears fail you ! | OUTSTANDING Their second release was another dopuble record set (now on one CD)and inlcuded more great songs. As good as their first release. Some of their most popular songs are on this one like 25 or 6 to 4, and Ballet for a Girl in Buchanon (Make Me Smile and Colour My World) By johncaudy (Wilmette IL.)
