| | Iron & Wine Around The Well CD Iron & Wine Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Delving deep into the Iron & Wine discography, the 23-track AROUND THE WELL compilation unearths rarities from indie-folk singer-songwriter Sam Beam's considerable catalogue. The first half of the Sub Pop collection focuses on spare, hushed bedroom recordings, many from Beam's formative CREEK DRANK THE CRADLE era--most notably the melancholy, God-fearing "Dearest Forsaken" and the achingly intimate "Sacred Vision." In relative contrast, WELL's latter half showcases Iron & Wine in full-band form, particularly on tracks written for the IN GOOD COMPANY soundtrack--"The Trapeze Swinger," a quietly expansive epic, and previously unissued companion pieces such as the romantic "Belated Promise Ring."

Spin (p.91) - "Beam's breathy croon is as soothing as a lullaby....'Love Vigilantes' beats them all, by bringing to the surface New Order's inner Johnny Cash." Billboard (pp.33-34) - "Tracks worth repeated listens include the eloquent, gospel-ish 'The Trapeze Swinger' and the luminous, harmonies-rich shuffle 'God Made the Automobile'..." Pitchfork (Website) - "'Communion Cups & Someone's Coat' sports beautifully layered vocals, while 'Belated Promise Ring' holds even with nearly any Iron & Wine album track with its softly ingratiating melody." Record Collector (magazine) (p.91) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "AROUND THE WELL is a luxurious collection of 33 rare and hard to find Iron & Wine songs....[With] a fabulous version of The Flaming Lips' 'Waiting On A Superman,' which is delivered with such delicacy it feels as if it could break at any point." $12.45 This singer/songwriter can say more with a whisper than most folks can with a scream. The gently insinuating despair of Smith's work communicates volumes about the heartbreak and alienation that is the bane of 20th century boys with too much time on their hands. Smith's day job fronting the aggressive post-punk band Heatmiser ...
| | Elliott Smith Xo CD (1998)
Around The Well CD music
$11.99 The Cinderella-esque climb from lo-fi indie cult artist to Grammy nominee/major label darling must have been a perilous one for Smith, who makes the leap to the big time here after three well-regarded albums on small labels. He's lost none of his bite, though. The production values on XO may be slightly higher, but Smith's vision remains undiluted.
The production, centered around acoustic guitar augmented by keyboards and lush vocal harmonies, recalls pop icons like the Beach Boys (especially on the closing acapella cut), Beatles and Big Star, but this is no sunny Cali-pop album. Leavening the instrumental brightness are Smith's Nick Drake-ish whisper and his thoroughly downcast lyrics, which cast him squarely in the Mark Eitzel/Smog camp of unrelenting self-effacement and misery. The combination of Smith's internal angst and his melodic pop constructions makes for a compelling artistic tension.
Recorded at Sunset Sound, Sound Factory, Ocean Way, Sonora, Los Angeles, California; Jackpot!, Portland, Oregon.

Around The Well music CDs
$20.25 THE VERY BEST OF includes a 46-page booklet with pictures and track information.
"Hole In The World" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
This 1994 greatest hits package (released in anticipation of the band's wildly successful reunion tour and album) supplants THEIR GREATEST HITS 1971-1975. It adds seven songs, but unfortunately deletes "Already Gone," one of their best rockers.
What's most interesting about THE VERY BEST OF THE EAGLES - apart from the presence of obviously classic songs like "Take It Easy" and "Hotel California" - is that it demonstrates that the band's esthetic was fully formed from day one. Despite the fact that the songs here span nearly a decade, listening to them back to back you could almost believe they were the product of one marathon recording session.
The Eagles' founders Don Henley and Glenn Frey were forthright in their desire to bring then-emerging country rock to new heights of commercial success. Formed in Los Angeles in 1971, they learned from their observations of the scene around them, and subsequently took their music to the top of the charts. They stayed there throughout the '70s, becoming synonymous with the sound of Southern California rock.
The band's first hit was with a song by Jackson Browne, and their first album also included a cover of "Ol' 55" by Tom Waits, but the bulk of the material ...
| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Around The Well songs
$12.05 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' year-end lists, and it's no wonder--the songs on FUNERAL are so packed with unique instrumentation, mesmerizing build-ups, and galvanizing tempo changes that they seem culled from some ...

Around The Well album
$9.95 On 2007's BOXER, the National's second full-length album for the venerable Beggars Banquet label, the Brooklyn-based indie-rock act follows up the lauded ALLIGATOR with another round of melancholy guitar-driven tunes. Led by deep-voiced vocalist Matt Berninger, who often sounds hung-over yet disarmingly articulate, the band excels at brooding mid-tempo songs, as exemplified by the world-weary "Fake Empire," which combines political and personal themes, and "Mistaken for Strangers," a track that recalls NYC peers Interpol, thanks in part to the punchy approach of shared producer Peter Katis.
And while his presence isn't immediately apparent, indie hero Sufjan Stevens contributes piano to two tracks ("Racing Like ...
