To The Core album
$21.94 When Anthrax released AMONG THE LIVING in 1987, the band was a part of a then-burgeoning heavy metal sub-genre called speed or thrash metal. This was an inversion of glam metal. The band members wore worn-out jeans and T-shirts, their long hair was hairspray-free, and not a smudge of make-up was applied to their unsightly mugs. Their music was dense, borrowing speed from punk and hardcore and mammoth guitar riffing from metal, and featured thought-provoking lyrics. AMONG THE LIVING not only served as Anthrax's commercial breakthrough, but (along with seminal releases by Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer) the album brought this new musical form to the forefront.
The members of Anthrax were a bunch of comic-book-reading, jam-wearing heavy metal fans from NYC, and the ...

To The Core album
$15.05 The American version of THE SILENT FORCE features two bonus tracks ("Destroyed" and "Jane Doe") not available on the European edition.
Available in the U.S. for the first time in 2008, Dutch symphonic rock heroes Within Temptation's 2004 epic, THE SILENT FORCE, continued the band's incomparable blend of classical, New Age, opera, and heavy metal music. In addition, the latter-day prog rockers' fourth studio release topped the charts all over Europe and scored two major singles ("Stand My Ground" and "Memories").
"The Silent Force" is an exhilarating listen - a monument of opulent melodies, sweeping orchestral elements and tremendous ...
| | Pelican What We All Come To Need CD (2009)
To The Core CD music
$11.49 One had to wonder what Pelican's signing to Southern Lord could possibly mean. To be truthful, while the band did write and perform more structurally formal material on 2007's CITY OF ECHOES, they retained their trademark post-metal aesthetic -- percussive repetition, overtone basslines, and nuanced guitar riffing. On WHAT WE ALL COME TO NEED, ...

| | Julian Cope Peggy Suicide CD (1991) (Import) United Kingdom
To The Core CD music
$26.79 PEGGY SUICIDE is either Julian Cope's fifth or seventh album, depending on how you count. After his fourth, MY NATION UNDERGROUND, he recorded two records, SKELLINGTON and DROOLIAN, that were intended mostly for release to his fan club--both are strange, drug-soaked sonic experiments that veer from folksy campfire songs to feedback freak-outs. PEGGY SUICIDE sees Cope reigning himself back in after those "excesses" and, though he delivers one of the most anti-commercial commercial records in the Island Records catalogue, it was also his most cohesive solo album up until that point.
Structured into four "phases," the album is a loosely connected concept album about the human-engineered and accelerated decay of the mythic Mother Earth figure. The tracks address this concept from, for the most part, a strictly personal, rather than global, perspective. Standouts include "Safesurfer," a freaky AIDS narrative with a not insignificant Krautrock influence; "Drive, She Said," a singalong about automobile pollution; "Youŕ," a short, charged rant against insincerity with a wicked, fuzzed-out bass line and snaky sax solo; and the staggering "Beautiful Love," a pristine reflection on just how "in love" one can be--if you hear only one Julian Cope song, it ought to be this one.
Deluxe edition of his 1991 fifth official solo album. Includes with extensive notes in which Cope explained the meaning of each song and stated that the entire album was a meditation on humanity's relationship to mother Earth. 34 tracks

| | Black Anvil Time Insults The Mind CD (2008)
To The Core CD music
$12.05 When three former members of New York hardcore band Kill Your Idols decided to shift gears into Scandinavian-flavored black metal by founding a new group named Black Anvil, it goes without saying that they were playing with fire, since few musical styles attract fans less forgiving and humorless. And, sure enough, what do you think Black Anvil's most obvious difference from the corpse-painted legions like Immortal, Gorgoroth, Watain, et. al was? Why, not taking themselves too seriously, of course. Mind you, it's not that Black Anvil lack in sincerity or show any disrespect for the inherently grim and frequently misanthropic nature of their newly adopted direction. They just don't subscribe to its more cartoonish and, let's admit, rather childish posturing and faux-Satanic hysteria -- perhaps in part because one: they're adults with, like, day jobs and other real world responsibilities, and two: this ain't Middle Earth, motherf**kers it's New York City! Chances are, if Black Anvil had attempted to vomit forth so-called "trve/cvlt" fire and brimstone, cynics would instead accuse them of forcing the issue. So, long story short, the band's debut album, 2008's independently released Time Insults the Mind (reissued the next year by Relapse), achieves a compelling balance between the broad aesthetic spectrum encompassed within black metal's numerous subsets by broaching extremity and experiment, raw savagery and sophisticated songwriting, all for a song cycle that's both middle of the road and refreshing in its directness. Thus, one is presented with infectious blackened thrashers like "Release the Kraken," "And You Thought You Knew Pain!," and the Motörhead/Venom homage "L.T.H.L.T.K."; atmospheric chill and cathartic blastbeat outbursts ...
