The turn Tanya Tucker takes on 2009's MY TURN, her first album in seven years, is her own distinctive take on 12 country tunes, all popularized by male singers. Tucker isn't quite gender-bending the way Lyle Lovett did when he sang "Stand by Your Man," but rather taking these songs directly, sounding as tough as any guy as she saunters her way through "Crazy Arms" and "Lovesick Blues." While it's true that Pete Anderson's dry, unadorned production gives this muscle and grit (perhaps the most sympathetic setting Tucker has had in decades), the triumph is all Tanya's, as she digs deep into these songs, finding new meaning within them and proving that a great covers album need not reinterpret the sound of a song in order to reinvent it. This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed ...

This 1994 greatest hits package (released in anticipation of the band's wildly successful reunion tour and album) supplants THEIR GREATEST HITS 1971-1975. It adds seven songs, but unfortunately deletes "Already Gone," one of their best rockers.
What's most interesting about THE VERY BEST OF THE EAGLES - apart from the presence of obviously classic songs like "Take It Easy" and "Hotel California" - is that it demonstrates that the band's esthetic was fully formed from day one. 1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version.
The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably the band's commercial high point, but A NEW WORLD RECORD is the group's artistic high-water mark.
Jeff Lynne reportedly regards this album and its follow-up, Out of the Blue, as the high points in the band's history. One might be better off opting for A New World Record over its successor, however, as a more modest-sized creation chock full of superb songs that are produced even better.
