Chicago-based duranguense outfit Los Horoscopes de Durango stands out from the crowd if only because the group is fronted by sisters Vicky and Marisol Terrazas (there are very few women in the duranguense genre). Fortunately, albums like 2009's PURA PASION testify that the Terrazas sisters are also fine singers: they shine on melancholy ballads and uptempo rancheras alike, the latter providing an excellent platform for their crisp, passionate harmonies. The tight-knit musicianship of the band (which has been playing since the mid-`70s, long before the sisters took the lead) also helps make PURA PASION highly listenable all the way through. Mexican-American siren Jenni Rivera started turning heads at the tail end of the 1990s, and a decade down the line she had become one of the pre-eminent female singers in the Mexican music scene. The 2008 album JENNI spotlights her abilities as a banda/corrido singer (her first love and main stylistic focus), but it also shows that she's versatile enough to handle mariachi, norteno, tejano, ranchero--the whole range of regional Mexican sounds. Throughout the album, her strong, confident voice leads the way fearlessly, whatever the musical mode.
It is no exaggeration to say that Jenni Rivera is one of the most polarizing figures in regional Mexican music. Her hardcore fans absolutely adore her, while her detractors aren't just mildly critical of her gutsy, often in-your-face approach to banda -- they are vehemently critical. Is there a middle ground? Absolutely. Discussions of Rivera's work aren't necessarily confined to either total praise or total condemnation; there is room for nuance. And in fact, Rivera's recordings themselves have plenty of nuance; nuance abounds on Jenni, which marks the first time Rivera did all the producing on one of her albums. Certainly, Jenni has its share of anger; Rivera has long been known for embracing irreverent, in-your-face lyrics, and that hasn't changed. But Rivera has hardly been one-dimensional.
