On his third studio LP, Mafioso rapper Rick Ross takes a page from the Notorious B.I.G., celebrating the spoils of his gangsta lifestyle over 14 considerably smoother tracks. Reeling from the allegations of his past as a corrections officer, Ross does his best to assert street credibility, throwing shots at 50 Cent on the album opener, "Mafia Music." From there, the Miami representative calls on a lengthy group of big-name guest artists (Lil Wayne, Kanye West, T-Pain, John Legend, The-Dream, among others) to collaborate on a slew of R&B-flavored cuts. Like Biggie at his best, Ross is able to maintain a mood of gangsta menace over the smoothest, radio-friendly beatscapes (courtesy of dirty south production heavyweights like the Runners, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, the Inkredibles, DJ Toomp, and Drumma Boy) while largely toning down the verbal violence in favor of lavish-life boasting.

Diplomats member Jim Jones began 2007 with the number one single/number one ringtone "We Fly High," then spent the rest of the year suffering a series of setbacks. His Byrd Gang crew stalled with main member and Jones protégé Max B sitting in jail, then Jones and his Dipset brother Cam'ron stopped talking, putting the future of their purple crew in question. Then there's the way his rival Jay-Z dominated the end of the year with his American Gangster soundtrack, an album Jones' Harlem's American Gangster apes in great street fashion. No, this isn't a Jay-Z raps over Dipset beats bootleg, but it is a street-level mixtape now liberated, rearranged, and cleaned a bit before seeing official release thanks to Koch. Former Jay-Z associate Dame Dash is brought in to host and upset the Jigga man a little while the Byrd Gang are pimped with the hooky "Byrd Gang Money," which is also the street-worthy highlight. "Love Me No More" is the standout club track, but its short run time is a disappointment repeated throughout the release, with only a handful of tracks allowed to develop past the three-minute mark. As Florian Fricke moved away from an early synthesizer-centered sound and embraced organic instrumentation in his quest to fuse Eastern and Western musical and spiritual traditions, Popol Vuh's rock orientation became more pronounced. That aspect derived largely from the contributions of electric guitarists Conny Veit (on Hosianna Mantra and Seligpreisung) and Daniel Fichelscher (on Seligpreisung, Einsjäger & Siebenjäger, and Das Hohelied Salomos). Letzte Tage - Letzte Nächte is the band's boldest foray into rock territory. On Das Hohelied Salomos, Fichelscher's guitar often eclipsed Fricke's piano; here, his presence is even more emphatic. That's not to say that the band has lost its equilibrium -- this is another classic Popol Vuh exercise in balancing and reconciling apparent opposites. An opening pair of instrumentals sets the tone. Buoyed by hard-driving percussion, on "Der Groáe Krieger" Fichelscher combines muscular riffage with a lightness of touch as he unleashes streams of soaring notes; "Oh Wie Nah Ist der Weg Hinab" builds on an ominous Floydian groove before lilting, interwoven guitar lines lift the song to its conclusion.
