Vibraphonist Gary Burton's classic quartet of the late `60s, consisting of Burton and guitarist Larry Coryell (later, Pat Metheny), bassist Steve Swallow, and drummer Roy Haynes, are often credited with laying the groundwork for the aggressive jazz-rock fusions of the `70s. Nearly four decades on from their, initial, pioneering efforts, original quartet members and jazz legends Burton, Metheny, and Swallow, along with newcomer drummer Antonio Sanchez, have assembled for QUARTET LIVE!, an 11-song live document recorded at Yoshi's Jazz Club in Oakland, California. Revisiting Burton (and Metheny) penned originals as well as material by Duke Ellington and Chick Corea, the group reaches new virtuosic heights, offering a fresh, modern slant on the fusion genre.

Quartet Live Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars)   Not bad, but not up to the ECM era records.
An attempt to return to the glory years of Gary Burton's early ECM period by reuniting with Metheny and Swallow only half works out.
First, the sound is typically modern - and that's not a good thing. Heavy, bloated throbbing bass that is not appropriate for this music.
Second, Burton is low in the mix (I suppose to favor the more popular Metheny) and it makes his tone a bit of the tinny and light side.
Third, the improvisations have nowhere near the fire of that classic period, and while fine, don't really go anywhere. Metheny has become a bit cliched, and in truth, the ECM period was really marked by the great Mick Goodrick as Burton's lead guitarist, with Metheny as the understudy.
A decent record, but ECM records like Ring, Dreams So Real, and Passengers are the real deal and should be the first stop.

 Outstanding recording in every respect
These four giants interact with beautiful rapport throughout this excellent recording. The first cut, Sea Journey, and the eighth, Fleurette Africaine, swung me into ecstasy. This recording will be voted one of 2009's best.

This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. As is to be expected, Holland assembled a fine cast of seasoned and young players, some of whom are veterans of Holland's quintets and quartets. These are four saxophones -- two alto, tenor and baritone -- three trumpets and trombones, and vibes as well as bass and drums. They include Chris Potter and Robin and Duane Eubanks, Antonio Hart, Steve Nelson, Josh Roseman, Billy Kilson, Taylor Haskins, Gary Smulyan, Jonathan Arons and Alex Sipiagin. One word that comes to mind when listening to Critical Mass is generosity. Double-bassist Dave Holland, four decades into his career, could certainly be forgiven for taking the word "leader" at its literal meaning, calling all the shots and keeping his musicians at bay. But that's not what he's about, and at any given time Critical Mass could just as easily have been credited to saxist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin Eubanks, vibist/marimbaist Steve Nelson, or drummer Nate Smith. Each player is provided with ample moments in which to take charge, and not fleeting, gratuitous moments but rather significant chunks of solo/lead space. Holland's belief in sharing extends to the area of composition as well.
