Luis Enrique is widely known for developing a new style of salsa that smoothed out and toned down the normally high-energy genre, pairing still-danceable rhythms with a mellow vibe and crooning vocal style. CICLOS finds the Nicaraguan singer mining familiar territory in his trademark relaxed manner. On tracks such as the yearning, "Como Volver a Ser Feliz" and the soaring "Inocencia" Enrique delivers a percussion-heavy yet soothing sound which evokes warm Caribbean breezes and romantic walks on the beach.

$10.35 Cuban salsa star Isaac Delgado offers up a typically festive album with EN PRIMER PLANA, which garnered a Grammy nod in 2007. While Delgado's resonant vocals are clearly the main draw, PRIMER PLANA also boasts a guest appearance by singer Victor Manuelle (on the bright opening track, "La Mujer Que Mas Te Duele") and some nice licks from revered piano player Gonzalo Rubalcaba (see the highly percussive title track), making for a top-notch salsa outing.

$12.79 If one thought that the big band flavor of salsa music was dead, GUASABARA is one album that refutes that theory. With a full band assembled in Puerto Rico, tracks like "Mambo Valentin" cross generational lines, bringing an old-school feel to contemporary salsa not heard in many years. Alto saxophones and intricate piano arrangements inject a classy jazz element into performances like "Amnesia" and "Me Voy De Aquí," making GUASABARA as good for listening as it is to dance to.
Bebop may have signaled the end of the swing era, but keyboardist/arranger/producer Jose Lugo is bringing it back with a vengeance. The big band Latino style created by Machito and his Afro-Cubans is something that has disappeared from the scene since the heyday of the salsa era. Now along with the help of Puerto Rico's finest musicians, Lugo has put together this project. This contemporary CD features 14 tracks that restore the dynamic driving force to ...
$13.49 Puerto Rico's number-one salsa orchestra reaches their 30th year with a great recording. The outfit, with their own musical brand, seems to project effortless musicianship in every cut; their usual war horses can make the most demanding dancer and salsa fan jump with delight. The recommended material is the title tune (composed by vocalist Charlie Aponte), "Psicología," and "Los Tenis" (performed by Jerry Rivas). ~ José A. Estévez, Jr.
